JCrew7384 Posted February 14, 2019 Report Share Posted February 14, 2019 Anyone have insight into this calculation? My Edge ST has about 1000 miles on it. I've been averaging about 20MPG pretty consistently, feels a bit low given most of my driving is highway, but is what it is. Today my car was telling me I had about 3 miles to empty by the time I got to a gas station. But to my surprise the car only took 16.6 gallons. Isn't it an 18 gallon tank? But mine is the same way, although I never got to 3 miles on it but have filled when it said I had 30 left. I still have not put more than 16 gallons in it. Actually, probably bad to know Every car has a reserve, but I would guess the amount varies on the car. Unless your fuel gauge is wrong, you're never actually empty at empty. Others may be different. That doesn't necessarily mean you can keep driving - part of that may be dead space in the tank where the fuel can't be picked up. Since it is saying it is close to empty via how many miles are left but the gauge seems to still read gas in it. On past cars, even Ford's the gauge would be at E when it said 10 miles left.
