Hello Edge Owners!

 

As the post title states, I'm new to this forum (but not forums in general) and, as you might have guessed, I'm considering a used Ford Edge.  So, here's my intro / background:

 

I grew up with my dad always driving a Chevy, but my first car was a Ford.  I'm (kind of un-intentionally) a Ford person . . . Of the 7 vehicles I've owned, only 1 was not a Ford (or Ford relative).

'91 Probe GL -> '93 Probe GT -> '99 Audi A4 -> '06 Mazdaspeed6 GT -> '14 Escape Titanium -> '13 Explore XLT & '07 Escape XLT

That Mazda was a fantastic car and led me to my first forum(s).  HP and handling that nearly competed with an STi/EVO but half the price and more goodies (leather, NAV, sunroof).

 

Currently, the Explorer is my wife's car and the Escape is mine.  I'm looking at buying a 1st Gen (post refresh) Edge Sport (maybe a Limited, but I really do like the styling of the Sport), and we'll keep the Escape around for our oldest kids (just a few months shy of getting their license).  Anyway, I'm here to gain some knowledge, share some stories and maybe make some friends.

Oh, here's what I've looked at / driven so far:

All depends on your budget. I wouldn't consider getting a non sport version but thats just me.  My lady doesn't mind. Then again her commute is less than 1 mile round trip.

 

The dealership in the second link might want to consider selling whatever the fu*k they smoking cause that price is straight out ridiculous.  The best thing about it is that it has low miles....... I'm sure the $6500 price difference is meaningless for a the discerning buyer who values a low mileage offering. 

 

The sport in the third link is appealing and the price is more in line with market values etc.  It has 13K+ miles than the one in the second link.  But it is also $6500 cheaper than the one in the second link. 

 

Esthetically speaking I like the look of the 2014 vs 2015. Performance wise I prefer the 2015+  

 

If you were looking at the mid 20's then I'd suggest looking at the 2015 sport. 

 

All depends on your budget.

What's kind of crazy (really crazy) is that the list price and NADA Value of the Edge in the second link aren't very far off (like, hundreds of dollars).  But if I was going to spend $25k, why not try and find a CPO?  That same dealer has a 2015 Sport listed for $23k - it has 56k miles on it though.

 

I really hadn't considered the 2015+ models (not in the Sport trim anyway) because of price - I may have to research some of the performance features now and see if those makeup for the additional cost.

I couldn't fathom it. I had to take a look.  I asked my neighbor who manages a dealership what they were going for. He said that they sell in the mid 20's based on mileage etc. He didn't realize they held their value like that.   I  said apparently neither did I. 

 

A 2015+ CPO Sport in the mid 20's is a good look!

see I don't know if I'd consider that good that the 15 is mid/low 20s since, most 14s are in the same area. Shoot. The 15 edge initial value dropped to mid 20s almost after 1 year of ownership, I guess the plus is it has held that spot.

Interesting point you made there.  Funny the conversations one can have while shoveling snow. I was asking my neighbor how they would sell on his lot. He said if he could he could get it low enough at auction (between 8-12K) he would.  He would take them on trade if it was in great shape and the person had realistic expectations. Here is the funny part, he said he wouldn't go out of the way to buy the 2012-2014 sport because they they would sit on the lot.  The average buyer would want a newer one.  They are too similar in price to the 2015s.   

 

If I was spending low/mid 20s I'd aim for the 2015.

indeed, no doubt most would take the newer car, but it's very very very intriguing that the 14s in some instances are out valuing the 15s

In just a few posts there's been quite a bit of food for thought.

 

I've continued to search, just to see what else is out there, and came across this 2014 Sport in Tacoma (~5 hours from home):

Listed at $22,500 with only 27k miles.

 

Anyway, I now have a couple of debates going with myself:

  • How important is low mileage?
  • How much do I prefer the styling of the 2014 (vs. the 2015)?
  • Are there amenities in the 2015 (like cooled front seats) that would be more beneficial?
  • Would I prefer the 2.7L Ecoboost or 3.7L V6?
  • Am I okay with a payment over $300 (since my initial goal was to keep it below)?

Here are a few dishes that you should add to your feast of food for thought!

 

Look at the cost of ownership/ maintenance involved etc. 

 

What needs to be addressed now and what can wait etc. 

   

Whether or not you will get an extended warranty etc. 

 

What type of warranty (what does it cover, how long is the coverage) will the dealership give you 

 

CPO vs regular

 

Try not to focus on the monthly payment. Focus on the overall cost of the vehicle.  Dealerships love fuzzy math that usually involves getting you the monthly number you want to spend but costing more in the overall grand scheme of things.

Aesthetically speaking I always though that the 2014 edge sport would eventually have a cult following.  Just did not realize that it would have a price too match so soon.  Sounds like you are considering the 401A package. Personally I love it.  The only peeps I have heard say that they don't care or don't miss it, is because they don't have it. Not knocking them, but it was on my must have list.   I work in the field so things like cooled seats and 110V AC outlet come in handy etc

 

Keep in mind that the more bells and whistles you have the more opportunity to for things to potentially go askew. Not trying to scare you, just being upfront. I would look at getting an ESP warranty for either vehicle.

I'm actually pretty good.  No remorse with my Mazda or the 2014 Escape.  With our 2013 Explorer, I wish I would have held out for a Limited with sunroof & NAV . . . but I won't have that problem here.  The differences, as you stated, are the design and engine / chassis.  At this point, I don't know enough about either to have a preference . .

I've always enjoyed the idea of modding cars, but I've never been one too dive too deep into it.  My Speed6 was the furthest and that was an SRI, upgraded fuel pump internals, upgraded engine mounts, wheels/tires, badging and coilovers.

Yeah, that part is crazy - I've been in the "cult following" for a car before with the Mazdaspeed.  The Speed6 was a beautiful car (in my opinion) and there was a rather large Mazdaspeed forum (supporting the Speed3/Speed6 and even the CX-7) that I used to frequent.  Prices were never really affected by the rarity / following though.

 

I have looked into warranties - specifically I got a quote from the 3rd Edge I shared.  They quoted me $1,995 for a 3-year / 36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty with a $50 deductible, which doesn't seem terrible.

Mazda makes some good looking cars. One of my neighbors has a new Mazda 3.  I've been side eyeing the CX5. I really like the way she looks.  Specs leave a lot to be desired but I digress..... 

 

Let me help you out with the warranty.  Google these vendors when you have a chance.  You can get much better warranty pricing by shopping online. Ask your dealership to match. The best warranty is a Ford ESP warranty.

 

Anderson and Kotch, Flood Ford, Zeigler, Lombard Ford, Champion Ford 

 

One of the best things about shopping online for the Ford ESP is that you can get ZERO % interest financing.  No credit check required.

Happy Hump Day!

 

Dealer delivered my 2013 Ford Edge today.  Dual roofs, navigation, BLIS and only 47,xxx miles.  The dealer was ~3.5 hours away and made the trek up here (through the snow!) to deliver.  Only 1 picture so far as I completed the transaction on my lunch break and it's still snowing:

Thanks everyone for the welcomes!

 

I've had my Edge almost 3 weeks now, and it's been fantastic.  I even already added the DriveBright LED taillights to my Birthday/Father's Day list :-)

 

A couple of items I wanted to get some input on from the experts here - I've shared these with the dealer already via video messages, but they are 3.5 hours away and slow to respond . . .

 

  • A gentle "whining" noise seems to be coming from the front of the car.  I assumed power steering fluid / pump, but the noise continued after I topped off the fluid AND doesn't seem to get louder when turning.  I only notice it when at really low speeds.  So, when I start the car and begin driving off I can hear it and it gets louder until it either goes away or road noise covers it.  Other threads seem to suggest PTU or exhaust clamps?
  • I've got the panoramic roof and the rubber molding / weather stripping / seal on the passenger side doesn't stay on the track / metal.  The "accordion" fold isn't as clean as the driver's side (probably because you tilt it up and when it closes it doesn't fold exactly where it should).  Should I apply some sort of adhesive to the lower section to keep it in place?
  • The roof liner above / behind the back seats isn't flush.  I can push it up and it will catch for a  second, but ultimately the liner is too heavy and un-velcros.

I have an ‘11 Sport that mirrors yours minus the features. I actually looked for one without the dual roof setup, but I also do not have the BLIS.  It has been great and has made it through one Indiana winter without issue. Anyhow, I would check your serpentine belts for the noise. I had a whine at lower speeds and idle, and did not sound like a traditional belt whine. I ended up replacing the serpentine and stretchy belts, along with the tensioner. My whine went away and the stretchy belt was pretty rough. I added a DriveBright HID kit and it is awesome. I can show you where I mounted things under the hood if you decide to give them a try. Also got the puddle lights from them and converted all the interior lights to LED. Just ordered all new rotors, pads and calipers for the next project. The seals on my calipers were torn and had some rust on the pistons, so I got new calipers, which were pretty cheap.

Dropped my Edge off at the dealer this morning as I've been unable to figure out the "whining".  They called back a short bit ago and said that they believe it IS due to the power steering system - one of the lines in the system needs replaced / upgraded.  $475 in parts & labor.  I'm not trying to find out if the warranty I purchased will cover this or not.  Wish me luck!
