Engine wants to stall - Code P1450 / P144A /C / P0496 / P0443 - Evap Purge Valve

There may be a couple of other checks that come to mind. Gas cap gasket or cap not clicked when being replaced. Wiring to the purge valve. Corrosion in the connector, Micky chewing on wires ..

CEL triggered again on the way home from work.

 

Gas tank filler cap seal is good.

 

Just read codes and installed a 3rd party evap valve.

 

First evap valve replacement in Oct 2021 at 71K miles and second at 110K miles.

Glad you found the fix.

 

Personally I wouldn't have used aftermarket, but maybe its good enough. What brand did you go with? Always good to know if aftermarket works (and holds up.)

Generally I use OEM but for this being a non critical device and two OEM ones didn't last as long as I'd expect, I went with the DORMAN 994073  at around half the price from RockAuto.com.

Welcome to the club of 17’ Edge Sport owners 2.7L EcoBoost who have to replace purge valves yearly :). I just did mine again as well. When my check engine light comes on in October/November it’s not even worth me checking the code anymore. It’s a different code each time, replacing the purge valve fixes it.

 

This year my Autozone part was under a warranty. I didn't have to pay, they just replaced it. This one looks different than the others I have put on. We shall see :). (Lets update each other in a year lmfao).

Looking at your results, it seems that your fuel trims are a wee off. (Could be the way your car responds however.) Still, I'm kind of wondering if there isn't a small  vacuum leak going on, on the evap purge line. (?)

Two tanks trial on the Dorman resulted in no fault codes and no stuttering immediately after gassing up, and just for to satisfy the tinkerer in me I tried a $9 solutions which also had a flawless two tank trial.

The $9 experiment was a failure.

 

Reinstalled the Dorman one and a trip to work without codes.

2019 Edge ST with 105k miles

 

Recently the check engine light came on and my scanner revealed the two error codes. 

 

Since the purge valve solenoid is right on top of the engine, I thought I would replace this first. Dorman 994-073 Vapor Canister Purge Valve

 

I tried clearing the codes but my cheap scanner won't allow me to do that, so I was hoping the codes would clear themselves, assuming the purge valve is now working. 

 

I have also cleaned and inspected the fuel filler area, but it appeared very clean and tight. 

 

I would also like to inspect/replace the charcoal canister but I cannot find it's location. If anyone could tell me, I would be most appreciative.

@RPGR90s I have used the Dorman evap purge valve and it did not work, or didn't work for long.

 

I don't know what it is and why the third party valves don't work but can confirm that the Motocraft replacements do work.

 

The current one I bought from this eBay seller and its been working for one year.

Get the free Forscan Lite to use with an OBDII adapter to read and reset codes.

 

You'll find the PDF's in this thread showing the location of the canister - it's not easy to access.

Thanks for the reply. I pulled off the Dorman unit and tested it with a 12v battery and it appears to open correctly as well as hold suction. 

 

As far as the under vehicle cannister, the only thing I found was forward of the muffler that has some hoses going to it and an electrical connector. It mounts right up against the floorpan just forward of the muffler.

I did all sorts of bench tests on  the Dorman and based on those tests I assumed it must work, but after a good web search found that for reasons unknown the 3rd party evap valves don't work - installing a Motocraft confirmed the search results.
