Hit a bridge and sell it to the insurance co. (This is only a joke. I would never give illegal info).

Or... is it still possible to find an engine in a junk yard? A new engine has to be close to 10 grand, I would think you could find one for a couple thousand and even with shipping and installation, save at least half. Even used is better than one with a leaky cylinder.

For those of us that have had this issue outside of warranty, how long can/have you pushed it.
Called the dealer yesterday and was quoted 7300 for a long block. Got some quotes from a couple Indy shops of about 4500 used engine low miles.

can I put a 2020 edge engine in a 2017? When I go to verify fit on eBay it reads doesn’t fit my car. There are plenty of totaled Edges out here with low miles and later model years where this issue seems to be resolved.

Did a crazy amount of research before I purchased this car in Sept 2020 (TSB was just making it way from ford then)

Trade in value is IMHO crap even with no issues, know everything with this vehicle and well let’s face it stuff isn’t made like it used to be.

if I do go though with the engine replacement as long as they are in there what else should I have them do. There is the flex plate issue new plate is like 45 bucks from ford. Seems like a no brainer to just have that done for the piece of mind.

Any thoughts or constructive advise appreciated.

Has anyone had any assistance from Ford on the long block replacement out of warranty. I have already had issue confirmed by another shop, but Ford wants me to bring it to a FORD dealer before they will even talk about it. Spoke with the dealer and they said 7300 for a the service. I just dont want to pay them an additional 200 for the Diag and get told it will be 7300 bucks for a new engine.

I wouldn't say it is reasonable, but it is probably close to what a dealership gets for the work. The long block is $2,600, not sure why the turbo is included, but the long block doesn't include the accessories, and I would replace the pumps, not the turbo unless something else happened to it. It shows 15 hours of labor, so $3000 if $200 an hour, so not sure where that other $4000 goes. This shows the parts required to do it, a lot of nuts and bolts and gaskets, but $4000 worth? https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10169807-0001.pdf

We need a little bit more information. Why is the turbo requiring to be replaced? What codes are getting thrown in the vehicle? How long have you been driving it after the codes have popped up?

I swallowed this very large pill about two weeks ago with 77,000 miles did not have anything to do with the turbo

they will charge you for an AC system discharge and recharge, and an alignment on top of the long block replacement labor just due to the nature of the task.

Thank you for information. I'll ask the question to dealer.  Really appreciate the help.

Just paid $8200 for the correct upgraded block due to coolant intrusion.  what's more pathetic of Ford is they replaced this defective block in Feb 2022 due to damage from the defective flex plate that cracked with the same defective block, instead of the upgraded one.  Even though there were to TSB"S saying to replace etc ?   Last Ford I ever own!  no wonder their sales sucks, their vehicles suck.

Mechanic here. My wife’s car is a 2017 Lincoln MKC that we bought early in 2020 just before all of this information came out about how terrible the 2.0 design with the grooved cylinder walls and head gaskets were.

71k miles - no extended warranty- still has a car payment. Now we have a po301 code. Cylinder one misfire and it slowly losing coolant.

I took out all 4 coil packs and plugs. Checked each cylinder with a borescope. Cylinder one appeared very dirty compared to the others - however no sign of coolant in the cylinder and the plug looked identical to the others. I moved the plug and coil pack from

1 to 2 in hopes that the misfire was a coil pack. The misfire came back the next morning on a cold start and unfortunately is still on cylinder one.

What I believe id happening is that while the engine is at operating temp - the head gasket is sealing properly - then as the engine cools of when its shut down - the gasket shrinks and shifts which causes it to leak coolant into the cylinder. Then on startup it misfires momentarily as the coolant is burned off. While the car is running at operating temp it is fine again. Of course this will become much worse at anytime now as the gasket fails farther.

So as a mechanic - I will tell everyone that I know - do not under any circumstance buy a ford product. They will not stand behind their cars and refuse to issue a recall to help their customers. After warranty runs out you will be on the hook for a new engine - in our case at 71k miles.

I told my wife that this car would be a safe reliable and dependable car - now we will be stuck with a paperweight that still has a payment.

I bought Edge 2018 SE, 145k miles from a private user. Foolishly, did not take it to a mechanic for thorough inspection. CEL came in 3 days, P0036, 0302, 0302, 0316 with coolant leaking in to the engine.

Local mechanic suggested to replaced the engine. As a last resort, I asked the mechanic to pour the head gasket sealer (BlueDevil). Next day, the car would not start at all. As per the Mechanic; the engine has been sieged.

Finally, bought a used engine (2020, Fusion with 57k miles) for $2500.00 & paid the mechanic $1350 to replace the engine & O2 sensor.

It has been fixed now, drove the car for 1k mile; so far no issues.

112,000 miles on current 2017 ford edge. Am told that coolant is leaking into the cylinders, and that it is a casting issue. The Ford dealership that inspected the car said that the only true fix would be replacing the engine entirely. Any idea what the average cost of doing that with labor could be?

I have a 2018 Ford Edge Titanium 2.0L with Error Code P0302. Ok, I know that this error seems common, but my symptoms are not quite what others note. I should also note that the I don't see any degradation in fuel economy, engine performance seems normal, or any other issues so far. The car has just under 87,000 miles. It was bought as a Certified Pre-Owned car with its 100,000 mile, 6 year warranty. Unfortunately, the "In-Service" date expired in August this year. Go figure.

1) Besides the check engine light with OBD-II P0302, the first sign of a problem is that the engine starts rough when cold started, but clears up after about a minute or two. After that, the engine seems to re-start and runs smooth.

2) Taking the easiest route, I changes all 4 plugs with Motorcraft plugs. No change.

3) I then changed the coil pack, and still no change.

So the $64,000 question is, would I be wasting my time with trying a Sea Foam treatment? If that doesn't do it, from what I've read, it could be a fuel injector, blown head gasket, or cracked cylinder. As I mentioned, other than an initial rough start, the engine it seems to run smoothly. My first guess that it could be the fuel injector. The later two "fixes" would only be considered it the engine runs rough continuously, which it doesn't.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

One possible issue it might be is the so called "coolant intrusion" issue. You don't mention your coolant level going down or needing to add some or frequently, but it is possible that is the issue, or seeing white "smoke" (actually steam) from the tailpipes. The spark plug from that cylinder would have looked different, probably lacking carbon or maybe orange/yellow tinged from the coolant.

All the plugs looked the same. No major flaws other than normal wear for their age. However, I do remember having to top off the coolant a few weeks ago. Don't know if this is related to what you're saying, but here in Florida, our summers are really hot, and the Edge is driven on the highway 3-4 times a week over 50 miles R/T.

I'll look at the exhaust to see if there's tell tale signs of steam.

I looked over the TSB (thanks), so I suppose that the next step is to have my local shop look at it, and if exhaust steam is present, have them do a coolant pressure test.

Thanks!

High ambient temperature doesn't result in coolant evaporation.

"engine starts rough when cold started, but clears up after about a minute or two"

The loss of coolant and the rough running on cold starts points to coolant intrusion.

There's a number of tests that can be done to confirm the coolant intrusion - try a forum search.
