2011 Edge major defect

overthe edge

Recommended Posts

I purchased a new 2011 ford edge limited with sync and nav. BIG PROBLEM If temperature is lees than approx 2*C the touch screen DOES NOT WORK for approx 30 min into the drive (NO nav, NO AC/Heater, NO radio NO nothing). I took the vehicle to ford and they told me ford is fully aware of the problem BUT dont know why, how or when or even if they can fix the problem. How can a company knowely sell a defect product and brag about being quality? I WOULD NOT NOT BUY A 2011 FORD EDGE UNTILL THEY FIX THIS PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. Calm down.

2. Find a new dealer.

You act like everyone is having this problem...you're the first person I've seen on this forum with this bad of a problem.

I'm no expert (by any means) but this sounds to me like a hardware defect.

So I am really bad at converting between systems... but 2c is just above freezing right?

It has been about 15f this week as I am leaving work and the car has been parked outside all day - touch screen worked immediately upon starting - no auto start used. calm down....

1. I am calm, very calm.

2. finding a new dealer is not the problem, the dealership was instructed from ford not to do anything (they aware of this problem) that it is a software problem. They (ford) is working on a "fix".

To me this is not acceptable. The Edge did not undergo sufficient testing or they just pushed out into market.

And just last week I was thinking ordering a new F-150 with the new 3.5 twin turbo.........

What is broken? does your screen specifically not work below freezing? that isn't design wide issue - it hasn't gotten above freezing here in a week and I have had no problems with my screen. Don't make blanket statements about the quality of something when you are having an isolated issue.

I can understand your frustration. There are several lucky owners here that have little to no issues and it's hard for them to understand our frustration.

I understand and feel sympathetic if you are having a specific issue with your car - but to say that it is a whole line issue that people shouldn't buy the car because of - is ridiculous.

Not to sound cruel, but I can't help thinking back to an article that was posted on this forum right before the '11 was released. It was about the female engineer who was working on the 2011 Edge at the same time her husband was dying. I am disappointed reading the large number of threads about problems with the new Edge and I hope they are just many different islolated incidents and not many major design flaws. I was so wanting a new one but I am going to wait til 2012 to see if things get a little better.

I agree. I have not had any problems with my edge. Everything works. Travel link, bluetooth, sync, no problems at all. I am a very satisfied customer.

What does this have to do with the original posters problems? There is more than one engineer working on a new release.

First off - I love my 2011 Ford Edge. It is a wonderful car on many levels and dispite issues I've had with it, I would buy it again. I love tech stuff and often buy new technology. I've learned while it's fun and cool to have the newest stuff, it often means I’m a guinea pig for trouble-shooting issues.

That said "over the edge" has brought up an interesting issue, that is similar the problem I'm having with Sirius Travel Link (still) not working.

That is, we have a problem that most 2011 Edge owners are not having, but Ford still can't/won't fix it. Just like me, "Over the edge" is being told Ford is aware of the problem and are working on a software update. Also, the dealership is told by Ford not to attempt any further repairs. This is very frustrating. If most 2011 Edge's are not having this problem, why can't Ford just gimme what everybody else has?

I posed this question at a Sync technical specialist in the Customer Relations department. His response was: The problem is in the software and exists in all of the vehicles. They frankly don't know why some 2011 Edges are working and others are not. He said it would be useless to re-load the software in my Edge because they don't know if it would work or not. He described all of the Edges that are not having the problem as "ticking time bombs" that could develop the problem at any time. He actually said this. I think he's making stuff up just to have something to say. That just can't be right.

Whatever the answer, if Ford wants to lead the industry in this new way drivers interact with their cars, it's clear they are going to have to improve their method for handling tech related problems.

No surprise that I agree with you but be careful!

The few who are happy tend to gang up on the ones that have the issues.

I find it hard to believe it could be a software issue!

It is very possible, but I would assume it would have to be implemented on purpose, such as it must wait for the car to warm up and reduce moisture to prevent possible failure from condensation and I'd also assume Ford would have known MS did this.

Also just to add to the stats, I've had a 5-6 days so far where the car was below 0C (32F) with no issues. There is a few seconds before the screen will respond to commands while I freeze my butt off since my heated seats didn't turn on with my remote start. But I'll live!

Just chill :reading: I'm sure all of this crap will be sorted out soon. Hey we were the ones that decided to buy first gen technology. Its hard being a BETA tester :stats: :banghead: :stats:

Hi all. I had this problem just this morning. I remote started the car, went out 14 minutes later ( had my climate settings to HI set at previous settings) and started the car. Nav screen was completely WHITE. I turned the car off and restarted it. Same issue. I drove to the bus stop which is .4 miles and still no screen. Sat there for about 5 minutes, turned car off and then on again and Nav was fine. My car was running for a total of 24 minutes before I got the screen back. I will be calling my dealer tomorrow. I can not tolerate that for the long run! Also having issues with BT Audio and the touch sensitivity but I can be patient with that. Hope my dealer doesn't tell me to go home!

Hey Zippy2011,

Please keep us posted on what the dealer says.

This issue is starting to concern me now, I wonder if Ford had tested this system in sub zero weather, especially the extream cold we can get here in Canada sometimes. I love new cool technology but damn do just miss buttons and knobs sometimes :(

I wonder if the entire mft would ever need to be recalled and redesigned at one point? I know the software has it's issues but this is proving the hardware now to.

People need to keep calling the dealers or emailing Sync, they need to be aware as much as possible. If we don't complain or advise them of ongoing issues, they will never know what's going on and what needs fixing.

After reading so many posts here lately, I barely enjoy gettig into my new Edge. Instead of being thrilled to own a new car, I find myself watching and waiting for something to go wrong, bug, or stop working. I hate that feeling.

Ford typically does cold testing in Yellowknife among other places. It is possible they didn't do enough testing but it's more likely that something changed late in the program or it's just a manufacturing tolerance issue.
