Blend,Mode and Recirculation

Driver side vents only blow ambient temp. NO cold AC air from it. But passanger side blows icy cold. Which actuator do I replace? And where is it located? Does anyone have a diagram of it? I know there's 2 actuators on the driver side and 1 on the passanger side. Help! Thxs. Also.... if I go to rockauto or others sites.... they show multiple actuators and valley them temp,mode,rec and blend. Becomes so confusing. I have the 2015 Edge 2.0L Titanium trim with dual climate auto control. If anyone can point directly to a link to the proper actuator, that would be amazing

Little update. This morning I noticed it blowing cold air. Do it's become intermittent.Ā  This started 3 days ago. Suspecting it's a failing temp blend door actuator. Also... about a year ago o fo recall doing the MODE actuator due to the vents not wanting to switch to windshield. They were stuck on front amd lower vents only. The mode actuator fixed the issue. But now for about 2 months now I haven't been able to switch to ground vents unless I do the system reset procedure that fixes it but once I play around to move the vents it fails again. Ever since this started happening I hear a click click sound when the car gets turned off. The typical clicking some people get when the hvac is acting up. What are the chances the mode actuator failed only after 1 year? I bought it off Amazon from Dorman.Ā

Air Handling

There are 4 door actuators that control the air flow into the passenger compartment:

  • Air distribution
  • Air inlet
  • Driver side temperature
  • Passenger side temperature

All of the door actuators contain a reversible electric motor and a potentiometer. The potentiometer circuit consists of a 5-volt reference signal connected to one end of a variable resistor, and a signal ground connected to the other. A signal circuit is connected to a contact wiper, which is driven along the variable resistor by the actuator shaft. The signal to theĀ FCIMĀ from the contact wiper indicates the position of the actuator door. TheĀ FCIMĀ powers the actuator motors to move the doors to the desired positions. The desired door positions are calculated by theĀ FCIMĀ based on the set temperature, in-vehicle temperature, ambient air temperature and sunload.

Ā 

When an airflow mode, desired driver or passenger temperature, fresh air, or recirculation mode is selected, theĀ FCIMĀ moves the actuator motor in the desired direction.

Ā 

TheĀ FCIMĀ sends aĀ PWMĀ signal to the blower motor speed control to regulate the blower speed as necessary. The blower motor speed control provides variable ground feed for the blower motor based on the input from theĀ FCIMĀ . A delay function provides a gradual increase or decrease in blower motor speed under all conditions.

AUTO

When AUTO is selected:

  • theĀ HVACĀ system operates in a manner to achieve and maintain the temperature set by the operator.
  • the driver and passenger side temperature doors are automatically controlled by theĀ FCIMĀ based on the temperature setting.
  • theĀ A/CĀ compressor is automatically controlled by theĀ PCMĀ from information sent by theĀ FCIMĀ , based on the temperature setting. TheĀ A/CĀ compressor operates as long as the outside temperature is above approximately 0Ā°C (32Ā°F).
  • the blower motor speed is automatically controlled through the blower motor speed control that receives aĀ PWMĀ signal from theĀ FCIMĀ based on the temperature setting, but can be manually overridden.
  • theĀ FCIMĀ controls the air inlet door to recirculate, partially recirculate or open to the fresh air position depending on the in-car temperature and humidity sensor inputs.

OFF

When OFF is selected:

  • the air inlet door closes, preventing outside air and allowing only recirculated air.
  • the blower motor is off.

MAX A/C

When MAX A/C is selected:

  • the air inlet door closes, preventing outside air and allowing only recirculated air.
  • the recirculated air indicator is illuminated (recirculated air forced on).
  • the footwell vent doors and defrost vent/register doors operate in combination to direct airflow to the instrument panel registers.
  • the temperature doors move to the full cool position. Air temperature can be manually overridden.
  • theĀ A/CĀ button is illuminated.
  • theĀ A/CĀ compressor operates as long as the outside temperature is above approximately 0Ā°C (32Ā°F).
  • the blower motor is commanded to the highest speed. The blower motor speed is adjustable.

PANEL

When PANEL mode is selected:

  • the recirculated air request button is enabled. If the recirculated air request button is selected (indicator on), the air inlet door closes, preventing outside air from entering the passenger compartment. If the recirculated air request button is not selected (indicator off), the air inlet door opens, allowing only outside air into the passenger compartment.
  • the footwell vent doors and defrost vent/register doors operate in combination to direct airflow to the instrument panel registers.
  • blended air temperature is available. Only whenĀ A/CĀ compressor operation has been selected by pressing theĀ A/CĀ button (indicator on) can the airflow temperature be cooled below the outside air temperature.

Air Handling

B1082:13 Right Temperature Damper Motor: Open Circuit ThisĀ DTCĀ sets when the module senses no voltage on the actuator motor circuit when ground is applied to drive the motor, indicating a open circuit. The motor can not move.

The Temperature Control Is Inoperative Or Does Not Operate Correctly - Passenger Side


Normal Operation and Fault Conditions - Temperature Door Actuator - Passenger side
Ā 

During an actuator calibration cycle, the module drives the temperature door until the door reaches both internal stops in theĀ HVACĀ case. If the temperature door is temporarily obstructed or binding during a calibration cycle, the module may interpret this as the actual end of travel for the door. When this condition occurs and the module commands the actuator to its end of travel, the airflow may not be the expected temperature.

Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
Ā 
Yes INSTALL a new passenger side temperature door actuator.
REFER to:Ā Passenger Side Temperature Door ActuatorĀ (412-00 Climate Control System - General Information, Removal and Installation).
TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern is still present, GO toĀ J5
No REPAIR the circuit.

Ā  J5 CHECK FOR CORRECT FCIM (FRONT CONTROLS INTERFACE MODULE) OPERATION
  • Ignition OFF.
  • Disconnect and inspect allĀ FCIMĀ connectors.
  • Repair:
    • corrosion (install new connector or terminals ā€“ clean module pins)
    • damaged or bent pins ā€“ install new terminals/pins
    • pushed-out pins ā€“ install new pins as necessary
  • Connect allĀ FCIMĀ connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
  • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
Ā 
Yes CHECKĀ OASISĀ for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If aĀ TSBĀ exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOWĀ TSBĀ instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern,
VIN required to access Guided Routine (FCIM)
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

I recently had to change out an actuator in a Taurus because I couldn't get the defrost vents to work.Ā  Major problem in the winter!!!!Ā  I was able to pinpoint which actuator it was by the clicking noise and getting my fingers on it.Ā  Unfortunately it was the upper actuator on the drivers side which was a bitch to get to. I made a little bed out of milk crates and a patio cushion so I could lay down and try to get the 3 screws out.Ā  Took me about 4Ā hours and I only got two screws back in.Ā  Had to go all MacGyver and make a couple extended 1/4" ratchet handles. My wholeĀ body was sore for a few days:)

Hilarious.Ā  I got stiff today from fixing it yesterday! I can't move aswell but fixed it.

Thank you! Good info. What threw me off from that diagram [found it earlier] was the direction it's drawn. Thought the front of the vents were on the bottom of the pic. Turns the bottom is the front [towards hood]. But thxs for the info. I ended up diving in and fixed it. Took both actuators and open to inspect. Both were fine. [MODE and BLEND]. What was the problem was the HVAC flap doors were just very dry and I'm sure dusty on the hinges. I ended up spraying silicon lube and manually spinning the MODE gear to move the flaps to get the silicon moving. After a minute of that... it felt easier to turn. Put it back together and NO MORE clicking. But the warm air issue turned out to be LOW freon. Bought a recharge for 40$ and now it works like new! What a ride!

Turned out to be LOW on freon. 40$ Autozone recharge bottle fixed it. The gadge read on the low side and filled it with 18oz bottle. Now cold air both sides. Apparently very common for duel zone AC systems when they go low on freon. You can try it and recharge. Might get lucky like I did.
