2011 SEL driver's door won't close

I hope someone can give me some advice. I did a search but could not find any discussions concerning this problem. I have a 2011 SEL with 25k. About a month ago, the driver's door became hard to close. We had to slam the door multiple times to get the door ajar sensor to indicate a closed door. I have been slamming the door so hard that I think something might break! We took the car into our dealer. The dealer took off the inner door panel and adjusted the latch under waranty. The problem seems to have returned after about a week.

The problem occurs almost every time we close the door from the inside or outside. The door looks closed but the sensor indicates that it is ajar. The cabin lights remain on. I am going to return to the dealer but I would like to know if any other owners have had similar problems. Please let me know.

Unless the door has tangible symptoms of being hard to close or not closing completely (won't latch, won't latch completely, visibly not closed all the way, etc), I would suspect the switch (not sure of the setup on our vehicle as it appears it is inside the door and not something external you can press to test). Slamming the door really hard just hurts other parts of the door.

I had the same problem that just cropped up on a used 2011 I bought. After searching the web, the faulty door switch appears to be a common Edge problem. I saw many posts on people trying to repair it themselves, but apparently the door switch is "glued" in and difficult to remove, so I took it to the dealer. Dealer quoted me $387.00 to repair. Of course, this occured at 43,000 miles and beyond the 36k warranty. After I showed the service manager all the posts on this "known" issue, they knocked $100.00 off the bill. I wonder why if Ford feels the customers should pay for this common problem with the car? I was thinking of contacting customer support to share, but not sure it would do anything.

Saleslug,

I had my door switch replaced under warranty. I was lucky it broke early. I am afraid that many 2011 owners will be facing this problem in the future. I hope Ford corrected this issue in later models. But, judging from the way Ford tried to shirk responsibility for our MFT problems, they seem to be trying to sweep this one "under the rug." I would think that they should have learned their lesson when they did the same for the MFT problem. What did it get them? Their reliability ratings hit the cellar and reviewers are still judging Ford products as if the MFT problems have not been solved.

I, for one, think MFT is great. I think many of the initial problems have been solved. I would be hesitant to buy another car without MFT although I have not taken the time to evaluate competing systems. Ford sales department promised things that Ford engineering could not deliver. When you see this kind of system failure, you have to assume that we will have to deal with other problems in the future from a manufacturer that doesn't quite have its act together. By the way, I still love my Edge. It's the best vehicle I have ever owned. I don't know if I can say the same for Ford owner support.

Lots of Taurus's had this exact same problem dating back to 2001. I had a 2004 Taurus with this problem that drove me frickin crazy!!!! The switch is part of the inner door latch system so ya gotta replace the whole thing when they go bad (Not a fun job). Hope this never happens to my 11 SEL.

Follow up. i just got off the phone with Ford corporate customer service. I was informed that they would document my comments for a possible recall, but they could not do anything to offset my costs. If they decide to do a recall, I would get a refund. I asked what number of documented complaints would trigger a recall, but the rep could not give me a definite volume number. I advised her to review the Internet traffic on this issue for all Ford cars to see there appears to be an issue, but she is only answering a phone and has no juice to address this issue. It was a nice way to tell me that Ford does not feel responsible for this common failure. Oh well, worth a shot.

They only issue recalls for safety related problems and this doesn't fall in this category. It doesn't matter how many fail. And just because it's a known problem that doesn't mean it should be fixed under warranty after the warranty period expires.

Ā

If you want added warranty protection you have the option of purchasing it at any time until the 3/36 warranty expires. If you choose not to purchase additional warranty protection you should not complain about something not being covered.

Ā

If Ford was supposed to cover every known problem on every vehicle then they'd have to raise the vehicle cost accordingly.

I am having this problem with my '11 SEL now too, it's at 71,300 kms. I just want to double check, so buying and replacing the driver's door latch assembly will fix this problem as the sensor is build in?

Ā

Also, how are the door panels removed in the Edge? Is it just the two screws on the bottom, then it pulls out and lifts up like normal cars? I'll be doing the work myself. Thanks.

I have been going through this issue for months and can tell you this:

Ā

Back in the day, cars had pin switches that shut the interior lights out and allowed you to lock the door. Problem is that the switches on our Edges are two rubber disks on the upper part of the door and close to the outside. I have been pushing both disks and one of them tends to feel like it is sticking. I have pushed this up to 25 times to clear this problem up. At first, I thought it was temperature related (During a winter spell in Phoenix, it got into the 20s). But the issue has been surfacing even when the temps have hit 80. Furthermore, the issue flares up when you unlock the door which means that something with the unlock mechanism is jarring that switch.

Ā

Ā

My dealership is aware of the issue and I am having them order the parts for it.
