Have a friend that work at ford and said that should always stick with Motorcraft filter because the way ford engineering for the motor? I was looking at Green Filter. Any thoughts? ls973800 Posted November 7, 2013 Report Share Posted November 7, 2013 I use just the OEM brand filters in all of my vehicles. Motorcraft in the Fords, AC Delco in the GM's, and Honda in the Acura. The filters are cheap enough to buy on eBay or Rock Auto even when factoring any shipping charges. I usually buy 3 or 4 at a time, and that cuts down on shipping. I do that just to protect myself if any thing ever goes wrong so the filters I am using can not be blamed. There have been several posts on a GM forum I follow where engine damage was not warranted because of failure of an off brand oil filter. GM even issued a bulletin to dealers to check the oil filter first when a customer complains about certain engine noises. For any small increase in cost, I'll stick with the factory OEM filters. Cellbine Posted November 18, 2013 Report Share Posted November 18, 2013 I have a K&N air filter installed. It has been great. Ever since I installed it, about a year ago, I get 20+mpg in city. And, this is on a stock tune, interesting. Yeah, before I swapped the filter I was getting ~18mpg. I have never reset the Trip 1 meter since my Edge was born, she now has 30k+ miles on her and average MPG is 20.7. I'm pretty sure I swapped filters around the 15k mile mark. Cyberdave Posted November 22, 2013 Report Share Posted November 22, 2013 I was at the dealer today and asked the service manager while I was there if using the K&N would void the warranty. He said no but that they don't recommend using it. Two techs were in his office and they agreed as well. They said you don't much from it and that if you use too much oil it will get on the mass airflow sensor or whatever it is and if you don't use enough then dirt will get it. Estuardo Fernandez Posted November 22, 2013 Report Share Posted November 22, 2013 I installed the K&N air filter when the car had 100 miles on it.. did not put any oil on it, (did not know you had to put oil on it..i still think you don't have too. Someone correct me if I am wrong) right away, it produced a different sound, a unique sound.. I live in south florida and it gets hot , so I use the a/c on max.. I am certain that I gained 1 to 2 horsepower but I lost at the very least 1 mpg... I have the SE version fwd and i get max 16 mpg in the city and 18 to 19 hwy... must be the weather and all the drive thru's i go too. I Still love my Edge, even with the low MPG.. RJG Posted November 22, 2013 Report Share Posted November 22, 2013 (edited) If you use a K&N filter, make sure you change your oil more often than manual recommends. They don't filter as well as stock paper filters, and oil will get dirty faster. I think your engine wears faster also, but some disagree on that. Also.....oil from the pre oiled filters has been know to migrate to MAF sensor wire....not good.....especially if it causes your engine to run too lean. Though it's usually the (over) reoiling after cleaning that causes the engine to run lean enough to burn a piston, and then you have to explain to a service writer why your engine issues s/b warrantied with that filter in there. That has happened. I don't understand why anyone would use a K&N filrer, technology from the 50's, unless you were doing intake mods to your car, and you couldn't find a paper filter that would fit or work. K&N's are available in an amazing amount of sizes and fitments. They can fit in all kinds of CAI systems, etc. Without too much engineering. And BTW.....filters do not affect fuel economy. Neither help nor hurt. Your CPU will adjust A/F mixture to setting in the tune, no matter which filter you use, or if stock one is slightly dirty. No MAF sensor problems and only had to buy my second recharge kit. Same filter for as many miles. Paid 50 for the filter and 30 for the recharge kits (two). Maybe I did something wrong but the engine is sound and no sensor issues. Sort of shoots that whole (don't use K&N filter) mechanic recommendation down. Just had the snow tires installed today at Tires plus and the mechanic said I rarely see vehicles with over 220,000 miles on them and I have not seen an 08 with 220,000 miles on it. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
fifthranger Posted April 21, 2014 Report Share Posted April 21, 2014 If I understand correctly, the K&N and other similar filters are over oiled by mistake by consumers, which cause the MAF sensor problems. I personally do not believe in those filters, and my replacement filters have always suited me fine. I have owned Rangers, and my wife has an 07' Edge. Sears/Kmart sells Spectrum brand air filters and Wal-Mart sells mostly Fram. I think Autozone or Advance had a sale on Motorcraft air filters, so I bought a replacement there. With 74,000 trouble free miles on my 08' Ranger and nearly 95,000 miles on our 07' Edge, I have noticed no gains or losses with replacing air filters every 15,000 miles or so. Also, I don't believe in the MPG hype gain. If K&N filters were so good, wouldn't they be OEM? Ford, for instance, doesn't manufacture Sylvania bulbs, yet uses they in the head and tail-lights. The most I've seen was one at the dealer for sale with 179,000. I hope to get 200K miles out of ours. I understand that the motor is pretty good. We have the 3.5 Liter V6 and pretty impressed thus far. We bought out our lease in 10'and besides regular maintainence only driver tie-rod and engine belt replacement. macbwt Posted April 22, 2014 Report Share Posted April 22, 2014 fifthranger with 236,000 miles so far the engine and tranny are sound. Suspension components will be needing replacement for you soon. I though am still running the same serpetine belt, but will be scheduling that for a change in the future. My left front CV/Shaft is now clicking and will monitor this as i put more miles on it..
