Tricia...thanks for the quick response. I PM'd you back with contact info. I will keep this thread updated of what they find just in case someone else has a similar leak.
-
Ah yeah that is it...I guess I remembered what they were bending wrong. Just remembered it happened when turning to one direction and assumed it was a line. So I guess I have no reason to have a restriction in my lines. The Ford rep on the forum was going to help out with my reverse cam issue, so I sent her a link to this thread just so they know about this too. At this point I have asked the wife not to drive it since we are getting close to the 60k mark. Even though I have had the vehicle in for the same thing several times I would rather not muddy the water by being slightly over.

Can't find a copy of the TSB now but I remember thinking it was pretty crude. They were to put a block of wood in there and pry the tube with a screwdriver I think.
-
OK so this is curious...I looked up the p/n listed for the banjo bolt (8E5Z-3A705-A) and the diagram it pulls up does show a hose in the system with a similar filter labeled as #8. I did find this assembly listed but it only says return hose, doesn't mention the cylinder in the middle. Out of curiosity...a long time ago we had to have a power steering hard line bent due to a hooting sound it would make when turning right I think...do you think that line could be comprimised and causing excess back pressure on the rest of the system causing this continual leak? I just can't wrap my head around a banjo bolt going bad 3x's...feel like something else has to be causing it.

Yeah hoping someone has a suggestion or the local rep can recommend a dealer. Just frustrated since both leaks have been there a while. They don't get caked up like that over night and one would think if someone complains of a driveline clunk you would check the entire driveline. I didn't get a chance to check the PTU fluid. Since it is bone dry all around I figure it is good. Maybe I will look at it myself in the summer. While the rear diff is obviously leaking I don't think the clunk is coming from there. The only noise I hear from back there is a slight whine which is probably a wheel bearing starting to go. I could be wrong but it still feels like the original issue that the TSB was to address. The only difference is I remember the other happening when you almost came to a complete stop then got on it. Now one of the places it happens I am coasting down a hill doing may 35mph with slight breaking waiting for an opening to turn left. If I am still moving and get on it to cross the lane it will clunk. Seems like the tranny is disengaging maybe for economy and when I get on it the gear slams in. Honestly didn't check any other fluid levels, originally I was just refilling the wash fluid and noticed the coolant looked low. As for the filter, yeah I am a little confused too. I saw the same link and the Edge wasn't listed so I don't know what to think. I am assuming it is a trans filter but this line runs to that manifold with a leaking banjo bolt. Could this be something for the power steering and this is the bolt they have already replaced twice? Just doesn't make sense to have power steering lines way down there. As for your other question, the vehicle was purchased NEW from a dealer by my office. The mileage wasn't 0 but I don't recall it being much more than a few test drives, maybe 150-200 miles. I think it was a dealer trade, or at least that is what I remember the sales guy saying.

First a little background; for a long time we had complained to at least two different dealers that after driving for a while we smell an odor like something has gotten overheated or is burning. We have also mentioned the persistent clunks we get in the tranny. Often when you are coasting through a yield then get on the throttle you get a clunk. We did have the TSB performed where they drop the tranny pan and this helped for a while but it is back. So after reading about all the PTU seal leaks I figured this could be the cause of the smell and if bad enough the clunking too. Well up until the second to last visit the dealers have never found anything or been able to replicate the issue. In that service they said the power steering banjo bolt was leaking. I figured this could be the cause of the odor but obviously not the clunking. Well shortly after the service the smell was back. In our last service they said it was the banjo bolt again. Well a few miles later and the smell is back. So today I finally got a chance to get under there and take a look. Luckily it does appear as if the PTU is bone dry. As you can see in the pics the seal and entire housing is clean, no residue that I can see at all. Good! But right next to the PTU on the passenger side is an XC3Z-7B155-BA which according to Google searches is a tranny filter. As you can see in the pics it is covered in something. What is confusing is the part doesn't seem to be for an Edge. Anyway, on the drivers side of the PTU I see a manifold with a banjo bolt that appears to be leaking. You can see in the pics that this has completely coated the cross member and is likely dripping on the exhaust. But this trans filter appears to be running to this same manifold. So is this the power steering banjo bolt they keep "fixing" or is this something to do with the tranny? If it is the tranny could it be causing the clunking issues? Also a bit annoyed with Ford service as there is clearly a rear diff leak too. You would think if someone complained of odors and clunking drivetrain they might check it. It is obvious from the pic it has been weeping out the breather for a while. Then I checked the engine bay and immediately noticed the coolant level is low. According to their service ticket they not only topped off the level but checked the "coolant protection." How could I lose that much fluid in 6K miles? Has anyone else noticed they don't actually do these check or do you think I have an actual leak somewhere? I am not finding any puddles in the garage, so if this did go down in 6K it had to go through the exhaust. Last, obviously by what I am seeing I don't have faith in either of the dealers I have tried. So does anyone in the NNJ area have a dealer they would recommend? Looks like Ford might get involved to help with my reverse camera issue so maybe they can steer me somewhere. Anyway I live up in Sussex and work in West Caldwell. So anything in between or around I am willing to give a shot.

Tricia...we have under 60k but not sure exact mileage as it isn't my DD. I think we are close to 59k though.
-
F#$&! This thing is going to drive me to drink. Sometimes it works completely fine other times it works for the first few seconds then shuts off saying I need to see the dealer. I just know they won't touch it...this is so aggrevating. This truck has had more issues than any other ride I have owned. God help us all after Sync 3 comes out and the hopes of extended APIM warranty completely vaporize.
-
Yeah think there is more to my issue beyong the cold too. Like I mentioned yesterday it was pretty warm and it happened. Plus the flickering image with green flashes sounds like something else. I suspect the APIM since we are having other issues but didn't know if anyone had luck resolving this. Seems like a typical MFT issue...sometimes you see it other times you don't.
-
Had that last time and dealer wouldn't budge. Without the diagnostic fee they wouldn't touch it. I can try another dealer but up until now this has been the easiest dealer to work with but they still aren't that great. Other issue is last time I needed a new APIM they had the car for like a week, so I am reluctant to go too far away for a different dealer as it becomes difficult to shuttle back and forth.
-
I have had the APIM replaced a few times and most recently at this same dealer. But the problem is they won't even diagnose if it is an APIM issue without you paying their diagnostic fee. I just refuse to dumb any more money into this system that has never worked right since day one, especially when I know with a reset/reboot you can sometimes make these bad behaviors go away for a short time. Just long enough that they keep your money and you don't truely have the thing fixed. But I agree with xK317Hx; I think with the new platform coming out we are going to see little to no support going forward.

A few thousand miles ago we started having intermittent problems with the reverse cam. First it was upside down, then it would occassionally go blank, flicker and sometimes flash green. I tried to get the dealer to look at it while it was in for an oil change but the dealer wouldn't touch it without charging us like $100 to diagnose it. Since I was sure they would just reset it and temp fix it I passed. Sure enough that is what I did and all was well until this week. Now we are getting the msg to take it to the dealer. So I tried a master reset and it didn't help the first two times we went in reverse, then the cam worked fine, then late in the day flipped, flickered and flashed green. Obviously I need to get this adressed but I am reluctant to pay to get this diagnosed since you can make it work temporarily and not actually fix it. Plus I really think it is a software/APIM issue since I have a bunch of other quirks. So even though that is covered under warranty it appears I can't get it fixed without paying something. I did a search and it seems flipped image is a cold weather issue but today it did it and it was 34 so I don't know if that is my problem. For anyone that has had similar issues, what was the fix? I need to narrow this down as the dealer doesn't seem to want to help.

I can totally understand your frustration about reading such posts over and over, but imagine my frustration. I have paid for a vehicle that still doesn't work reliably. Over and over I have been told by Ford to what for the next update, then told I had to wait for replacement APIM's...all of which I have done to no avail. Now I am out of warranty and the dealers refuse to look at the system; even though I have a well documented history of problems, without charging me $100 diagnostic fee. This was confirmed at two other local dealers. I had originally thought when Ford up'd the warranty they did it on the system not just the APIM. As for why I still have the Edge; well this is two fold. First this is my wife's DD. With the exception of the reverse camera issue, the quirks don't drive her as crazy as they do me. If this were my ride it would have been gone long ago. Maybe since she drives a shorter distance, something not working right for 15 min isn't as infuriating as an hour plus ride. Second, since the issues with MFT are well known the trade in on this vehicle puts us in a position where we would take a loss. Oh and not to mention, Ford has promised they would make this right. I guess my trust was misplaced. As I have posted in other threads, I am fully aware that many people have MFT systems that are stable and seem to be working fine. I am happy for those people, jealous but happy. But as much as you may get frustrated with my posts of continual problems, I get frustrated with the continual white washing some on this forum do. The truth is there are many people that are still having problems and Ford moving to a new platform means I will likely get no help.

WE WANT APPS ON MY FORD TOUCH!
wlepse replied to CinnamonEdge's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
Don't hold your breathe...doubt they will do much else from this point forward. All you can do is take your money elsewhere when the time comes for a new ride. Also make sure anyone you know looking for a new ride knows the type of support you received. Based on my experiences several friends have scratched ford off their list. While the new system will likely work much better it is important people know what kind of support they can expect from ford if things go wrong. -
Or reverse cams stopping/flipping, phone background noise, USB that randomly is recognized, GPS location randomly off and voice recognition that functions 25% of the time. I am sure there are others I am forgetting but I think that qualifies as plagued. Also sucks that even though my system has had problems from day one if I want ford to look at it I will have to spend $100. Also ford has to make up their minds....is this software or hardware. Early on we were told to wait for the next update then the magical rewrite but none fixed the issues. Then they blamed hardware then we were told again to wait for update. I have had apim replaced at least twice and we still have issues. At this point I have lost all hope that ford can or will make this system work right.
-
I fully expected them to stop supporting it in the future and no longer have features added...what I didn't expect was they would cut the cord before it worked. Several years have gone by and it is still plagued with bugs and dealers refuse to support it without first taking another $100. Worst customer service I have ever experienced.
-
Spin it however you like. Truth is there are and have been many industrial and commercial applications for touchscreens that see more user interface with a better tactile experience than the MFT. And if Ford was so concerned about customer satisfaction they would have done more to help those that ended up with cracked screens due to the need to actually push the screen when making a selection. As for the cost reasoning...sure I do think cost had everything to do with their decision. But again they still could have picked a resistive touchscreen that had decent sensitivity and still kept the costs down.
-
One funny take away from this press release...Ford finally put in a real touchscreen. Back when MFT was released many wanted a multipoint touch but could understand there would be issues due to use with gloves. But no one but Ford fanboys could understand why the touchscreen sensitivity was garbage and required an actual push of the screen. At the time some were saying the poor sensitivity was due to it needing to be so rugged for automotive use. So I guess Ford gave up on rugged designs? That, or as we all know the original design for MFT was half baked.

WE WANT APPS ON MY FORD TOUCH!
wlepse replied to CinnamonEdge's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
As much as I would like to have apps, especially since I was told I would have them...I would settle for a system that actually works. Nothing gets me more frustrated than random bugs since I can't plan to work around them, then couple that with the constant BS from dealers trying to pass the issues off as user error. As for the trasplant idea..I would gladly give up that display. Sadly I think the cost to do this will be prohibitive. If the cost of the MFT adder was $895 I am sure the "real" cost is closer to $1200 since that would include the stock base system. Just not sure it is worth that to me since I know it won't help resale later. -
Haven't done it on the Edge as ours came with heaters and so far they are functioning fine. But I did replace the heater in my Audi. Much easier than I expected, but in my case everything was there. I ended up taking out the seat and bringing it in the house. Just sat down watching TV as I too the seat apart. I think they suggested hog ring pliers and new rings but I was able to reuse everything and I think I just used regular pliers. I am sure the special tool would make your life easier though. I wouldn't really worry about the airbags as much as I would worry about the wiring and making sure you route it in a way it doesn't get pinched when changing the angle or fore/aft positioning.
-
Several of the articles discuss carplay and android auto...if you go to either official site it will say Ford is going to be supported but I suspect this will be up to Ford to integrate it. Since the new system does have more power maybe they can support all of this, but at this point I wouldn't trust Ford unless I saw it working. I was told a bunch of things would be brought to MFT that never materialized. Seems odd they made this press release now when CES is so close. I was thinking about stopping by their booth this year if I make it, would be interesting to take a look at this first hand.
-
Not sure if they will get parted out...thought I read in one article something about the system controlling the HVAC. Not sure if that means it just has redundant controls on the touchscreen or if that means the redundant hard buttons are routed to the unit to control the system. If it is the later the only part outs you'll find will be wrecked vehicles.
-
I guess the chances of my system ever working like they said it would are just about 0% now. And to the poster above about the dealer doing free software updates with extended APIM warranty...bogus. Just had mine in again recently because on occasion the rear cam would be upside down or say unavail...dealer told me they would charge $100 to diagnose and software update was not included. Took it home and installed the update myself and it "fixed" the issue. But I think the service on these older units will be even less in the future now that they will be leaping to the next platform. While I think the new hardware specs and platform look promising I am very concerned Ford is back to where they were when they released MFT. All the articles I have read mention a multitude of features they will be adding in the future...sounds earily familiar to what we have all been promised.

Man I wish we could get anywhere near 22-24...I think the best we have ever seen was 21 for one tank while driving from NJ to NC. Most of the time we see 18-19 and it doesn't change much between city and highway. Anyway I really can't complain. I would certainly consider getting these again at full price of ~$120 each but at less than $70 each these are a steal.
