  1. If you want the best synthetic go with Amsoil. They were the first in synthetics. Iv'e been using it for 3 decades with exceptional results, including fleet vehicles I used to maintain.

I have no doubt that its a good product, but price and availability has me sticking with Mobil-1, which I've been using on my Harley and cars for decades with exceptional results.

  2. Ok then Pg 1 post #4 of this topic string.

Intake valve coking is coking no matter what 4 stroke direct injected motor it's on.

    Recommendation:

Read from the beginning of this entire topic string to have a full understanding of where Xtra, SpecialK & myself where going with this topic string... :hat_tip:

Ordered a billet one with standard hose. The braided hose cost to much and is unnecessary bling. Braided hose is great for high pressure or wear resistance. I paid $498.99 + shipping for a total of $517.99. If it prevents things like in these photos then it is money well spent . What is the use of porting heads or a 3 angle valve job if they collect junk like in these photos.

The point I'm making is that as yet we have no evidence that the Sport is indeed fouling anything similar to the pictures presented of other non-Ford vehicles, and once we know that, we can make an educated decision on the need to add an aftermarket catch-can.

You could present argument that there's no harm done adding a catch-can whether we need it or not, but why not present it as such in the absence of actual model specific data.

This gas is scavenged into the air intake system through the PCV system, which incorporates a crankcase vent oil separator

Can anyone confirm if the above is true for the Sport?

  3. Totally get your point KLinNBC

However, if U Ref the Pics in my 2nd post on page 5 of this topic string I seriously doubt any rational engineering minded individual can call that amount of coking as acceptable?

    Do U not agree?

SpecialK. your perspective on the issue?

    No, SpecialK's S4 Audi direct injection V6 after 57k

It would be more credible if we posted reports and images of a Ford Sport in this thread.

  4. I have a 2013 ford edge limited and I am having trouble out of it not starting when it gets hot outside. I can roll the windows down for about 30 min. Then it will start all the research I've done leads to the ignition switch. Has anyone installed one? I do not have the push button start.

Could you post a few links to this research you did?

  5. Just read the attached General Service Bulletin (GSB - Gasoline Engine oil and coolant leaks at the turbocharger) and found an interesting bit of info:

NOTE: It is normal for a small amount of combustion gas to pass into the crankcase. This gas is scavenged into the air intake

system through the PCV system, which incorporates a crankcase vent oil separator.

Who 'can' confirm if our Sport incorporates the crankcase vent oil separator - if it does, that would explain why Beez reports that his expensive catch-can installation doesn't catch anything.

  6. Finally got around to installing the JLT catch can today. The install is super easy and quick, it only takes a few minutes with basic hand tools. It took me around 15 minutes because I had to R&R the Strut Tower Cross Brace otherwise it is a 10 min job. Having the hose pre cut to length with snap on connectors makes it super easy and neat. The finished install looks OEM except the JLT logo is cut into the bracket. If the JLT logo was not there you would never know it was a aftermarket item. I gave it a test drive and everything check out fine. I will report what it catches after 1,000 miles. For cost, ease of install and OEM looks the JLT catch can is hard to beat. I can also restore the car to stock for smog inspections just as easy and fast. B) The peace of mind it gives protecting the heads and valves is worth the price alone. It is a good fix for a basic design flaw by Ford.

I'll need a few reports confirming the performance of any of the catch-can systems mentioned in this thread before I claim "peace of mind".

Do we have any evidence that the Sport has a "basic design flaw by Ford". or is it just hype and hearsay?

  7. I put a couple hundred miles on the Atturos this weekend and my first impressions are great, they seem to handle pretty damn well for a $130 tire, no doubt. The hook very well, which is what everyone has been claiming about them. Apparently these tires have become very popular for charger/challenger scat pack owners because of they're good hooking characteristics (and cheap cost of course). They come in 255/50 x 20 also, if anyone is looking for a super affordable performance tire for 20 inch wheels, I think they're even a bit cheaper than the 21's...closer to $115 each. We'll see how they wear in now, they would need to have very disappointing wear characteristics to not justify the price of these.

By now you must have a few thousand miles on them - are they still doing good, and would you buy them again.

I'm considering these, but all the fitment places around here are asking a fortune to fit tires not bought from them, so still need to figure out how I'll get that done.

  8. I have just over 25,000 miles on my Edge and have really been disappointed with the gas mileage. Then I found the real reason. My gas mileage was computed at 21.7 on a recent trip but when I manually computed the gas mileage it was 24.9. Now I am not disappointed any longer. Am I the only one who relied on and believed the computed gas mileage?

I reset the trip meter every time I filled up and manually calculated the mileage/consumption and finding that the computer mileage was quite accurate, I no longer manually calculate it.

My Sport has 26,500 miles on the clock and during winter I was getting 21~22 mpg, now that summer is here I'm getting 23~24 mpg - I was expecting it to be more economical in winter when the AC compressor isn't running.

  9. Just put Bosch Icons on my 2018 Edge Sport

They have built in wind degelection wings builf into them and while the driver side one is perfect...the passenger side delector seems backwards

The latest model 2018 Sport and it needed new wiper blades already?

The OEM blades on my 2017 Sport are performing so well that I've decided to stick with them when the time comes to replace them.

  10. More importantly now that they offer a rental option, they probably won't be held liable if something does happen prior to repair work being completed.

Remember, this is for the PASSENGER air bag recall ONLY. Still have not addressed driver air bag recall. You may not have a passenger in the front seat 100% of the time, but you are sure to have a driver ...

My 2017 Sport build date is Feb 2017 and had the drivers air bag recall done at my local dealership around June 2017 - just took a couple of hours.

Should I expect a recall notice for the passenger air bag?

A couple of years ago my company 2010 Ford Fusion went in for the gas tank recall - it needed a new gas tank and there were no parts available, so I drove a 2014 Fusion for 7 months while waiting for the gas tank.

  11. A little more then 11oz came out. In my opinion the fluid was ok at almost 28k miles. On my car its not to hard to do so no big deal to do it every 30k. But it probably would last longer. The size difference of plugs also.

Your oil looks better than mine did at 5K and 15K, and sure doesn't look like it was in need of a change.

Your PTU looks different to mine and to @JSchneid

His casing looks very different and his plugs are the same type of torx T50 as mine, with the drain on the underside.

Odd that there's all this variation.

I use one like this, but you need to purchase at Walmart or AutoZone and check it out to confirm its the robust higher quality one - I dumped two that I bought online, then decided to inspect before I buy the next one, but that was some time ago and I cant recall where I bought it.

  13. I don't see a separator listed on the 2.7EB parts diagram.

With no evidence either way regarding an existing separator, and no inspection reports showing intake valve fouling, its not really possible to make a call on the need for a catch can on these engines.

  14. The fouling is a gradual problem in Ford's case, and has been touted as the least severe of any of the auto mfrs worldwide. Also, depending on platform, the problem may be statistically minimal. In the case of the F150, the catch can setup is highly recommended. Whereas in the case of the SHO, very very few cases of a catch can being needed have emerged, especially since the valve cover redesign in 2013. Best way to know if you have an issue with your vehicle is to periodically inspect the turbo piping and the intercooler for pooling oil. A misting is normal, pooling is not.

Is it possible that the 2.7L EB has this - it would eliminate the need for external separators (catch cans).

  15. Checked the can after 5000km of winter driving. It had about 350 mL of liquid (more water than oil). So apparently it does work, but not very well in the summer. The front one remained empty, but the main rear can was fairly full. Also removed the stainless wool before the winter.

The water isn't going to have a detrimental effect, possible have a cleaning/decoking effect.

I wonder if Ford has started incorporating some kind of separator inside the camshaft covers, leading to less oil being passed to the intake.

Interested to hear from those with high mileage if they've had any issues with carbon build-up on the valves and if anyone has actually pulled the intake manifold to view the condition of the valves.

There's been photos posted here of badly fouled intake valves, but it turned out they weren't from a 2.7L EB engine.
