2008 Edge AWD - loud noise - wheel bearing?

Recommended Posts

New here and seeking some advice.

I have a 2008 Edge AWD its making a very loud noise when driving down the road. Everyone I talked to said wheel bearing noise as it gets quieter when turning (right turns especially), louder with more speed. It's for sure coming from the front end. However I just had the bearings replaced on both sides even though they didn't seem bad. The sound never changed. The tire rod ends were also replaced as they had a little play in them. The noise remains the same. I was thinking maybe CV axels? but there's no popping sounds I am told is associated with it. You can barely hear it at low speeds and the sound gets increasingly louder with speed, to the point you can't hardly hear anything else. I don't want to keep throwing money at it and hoping it'll fix it, but I need to do something.

If anyone knows what it is, I sure would like the help.

If you have any further questions or advice on this issue, just let me know.

Also, in a possibly related question,,, there is a loud clunk when going from drive or park to reverse unless you completely come to a stop and pause for a second or two, then it doesn't do it. This has been going on for quite sometime, maybe a couple years, but the other noise has progressively gotten louder over the last few months. If you could help diagnose the cause of this I'd greatly appreciate it too. (engine mounts seem solid if that matters)

Thank you.

  • 1004ron changed the title to 2008 Edge AWD - loud noise - wheel bearing?

A sound that changes with speed and steering direction like that in my experience is usually a wheel bearing.  One that loud should be pretty easy for a mechanic to find.  Those will often lead to ABS sensor errors when they get really bad.  Pretty common problem as a vehicle ages if that is what it is.

Have you checked your brake pads?

The Edge uses a mechanical wear indicator comprising a metal prong that makes contact with the brake disc when the pads are at their wear limit. It makes a horrible screeching noise.

What year and what manufacturer of pads have a squealer? Very few I found for 2016+ (I don't know what years are grouped together) aftermarket have them (Top Notch brand, some Akebono), none on factory installed pads I have seen. None for first gen.

Now we are think PTU, how do you troubleshoot it to know if it is bad?

I don't think that the PTU can be ruled out - there's some influence on the CV Axle when turning the steering - it's going to take some exploration to clearly identify the noise source.

I've got one of those "exploration" problems on my 2017 Sport - vibration when accelerating at speeds around 60mph - changed the control arm, that wasn't it - this weekend I'll be replacing the CV Axle.

PTU was not the source of the noise, nor were the wheel bearings. Both were replaced. Where to look next?

I'd rotate the tires. If the noise moves, then you have found your problem. If it stays the same, then there's something else going on. But the rotational noise you're getting could just be bad tires.

When going bad, wheel bearings make a squeal, not a hum.  I know you just had them replaced, but sometimes you get bad ones.  I had one of mine replaced after only a thousand or so miles.

Brakes don't make a hum either.  They squeal when either contacting the metal rub strip or when the brake pad metal backing meets the rotor.

That hum sounds like some type of rubbing noise.  Maybe the tire rubbing the inside of the wheel well.  Maybe something wrong with your steering components

How are the engine mounts? "there is a loud clunk when going from drive or park to reverse unless you completely come to a stop"

From your video, you varied both speed and RPM simultaneously. It is tough to tell the culprit.

Have ALL 4 wheel bearing been replaced?

I suspect a bearing too but as you state which one! A remote mic coupled to your

cellphone, secured close to each bearing would allow you to pin point the right spot for less than $50.

A trick I've learned is to get all 4 wheels off the ground and spin them by hand while holding onto the spring or another nearby suspension component. A lot of the time you'll be able to actually feel the bad bearing.

Back in the day, mechanics used to identify the source of the sound (especially wheel bearings) by putting a long screwdriver (I used one with a wood handle) on the outside of the bearing and ear to the top of the handle. Acts as a sound amplifier quickly isolates which (or if) bearing is failing.

As the PTU has already been changed, I would also take a look at the driveshaft bearings  and RDU.

(Do they still put microphones on parts and drive around?)

I assumed the OP does not have a lift so I was offering a simple DIY for a quick help.

As you know, most people can't tell where most sounds originate (F/R L/R). On most

client's claims of sound origins, I would Inspect the exact opposite corner first. In a higher

percentage of times, they were wrong thus cutting my time and the $$$ they spent with me! (WIN WIN)

With these cavernous insides of these Edges, put the seats down and boy do they get LOUD! For years, I did

Rattles,Squeaks and Bitches with "Grandma's Grocery List" a mile long! I have ridden all over a car in search of

a client's satisfaction of a noise elimination. From riding in the back seat ( aahhh heating and A/C in the right season),

multiple trunk rides for several miles inside and outside, clinging for life in the hood was the most scary!

But, I never tried holding on with a stethoscope!🤣
