  1. Other than recent topics not showing all of the recent topics, everything else seems to be working fine.

Yes, the post count error it appears to be working, which of course wasn't the case - see below comment from the poster who also picked up on the error.

    http://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/10914-ptu-leak-failures/?p=187822

Yes, I noticed this and wondered why no one replied to the thread. My guess is that it didn't even bump the thread to the list until I posted my follow up.

  2. So far so good with my fix. Had a drip the next day but nothing after that. I'm suspicious that filling to the side fill plug is slightly over full as mentioned by others. There are no drips now and no heavy smells. There is still a slight odor in the garage ,but I also wasn't able to fully clean the PTU top side and even just this can cause odor.

    What was your fix?

  3. Anyone notice this ?

My 2018 Edge SPORT drops the first 1/4 of a tank to 3/4 full very quickly....then that remaining 3/4 seems to slow down to a normal usage level

Same here, but not unexpected seeing as the gas tank is such an irregular shape makes it virtually impossible to get a perfectly accurate and linear level measurement.

    Its a rough guide only.

  4. Why on a 1,800 mile road trip all highway, could i only get 26-27mpg in 65 degree weather & no a/c running going down to sea level , but got 29mpg+ coming back up to Ohio while running the A/C? The only difference being resetting the ECU.

    https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=11031

It could be something as simple as the gas used for your return trip being very different - I get different gas near my home (reformulated) to gas stations near work, 40 miles out of town (not reformulated).

You may think that you see benefit in resetting the ECU based on unregulated test environment, but without any engineering explanation based on controlled testing I'd personally not do this.

  5.

New plugs? Not sure what those are. The Edge does have 38k miles on it right now. I've only had it a week and a half so far.

The spark plugs are good for at least 100,000 miles and if you don't have any misfiring there'd be no point or gain changing them early.

Also, I'd advise against resetting the ECU because doing so wipes out all the adaptive tuning constants - the ECU is always "learning" and applying tuning adjustments based on the many variables encountered such as fuel, ambient temperature, driving style, .......

  6. I was under the vehicle to set the jack stands for tire rotation and found these two underbody shields rattling, and realised that its the source I've heard when the sound system was turned off, then a search produced this thread.

Thanks for the TSB - I'll consider getting the dealership to take care of it when I next get it serviced, but for now I did something similar to the video in this thread, but using two wraps of string and tied.

Feels secure, and will check it again after a few thousand miles.

Keen to know what parts the factory fix uses, and how to detach these plastic securing clips.

  7. Isn't the "air induction" nothing more than a small air scoop moulded into the under cover that scoops up air and blows it onto the case of the PTU?

It could be, but would be great if @macbwt would respond and confirm what he was referring to.

One of our members posted pictures of his PTU that had cooling fins, drain plug, and the air scoop, which looked more robust than my Sport's PTU.

  8. About 26 MPG or about 9L per 100 km. Never done better than 22-23 MPG on highway, or 10L per 100km.

Then you're getting about average, I get 23-24 mpg in mixed town and highway.

We operate our vehicles in a very uncontrolled environment, and with the same driver, same vehicle, same route, same climate, don't expect to achieve exactly the same consumption figure from one day to the next.

Did you apply the "tune" for improved economy?

  9. I meant what was the miles per gallon (mpg) or km per liter (km/l) or liters per 100 km (l/100km).

    Glad someone else asked.

With my 2017 Sport I get 22-23 mpg in winter and 23-24 mpg in summer, with a mix of 80 mph highway and 40 mph town driving.

Its odd that in summer the AC compressor is running a good deal of the time, and the mpg is better.

  10. My 2017 Sport has the drain plug, but not the air induction, nor increased gear lube volume - did the air induction and increased lube come later than 2017?

Not sure what the gear lube volume was on previous versions, but mine is just shy of a quart.

Can anyone else confirm if the very latest models have air induction and increased lube volume as @macbwt

    indicated?

On older models (maybe the new ones too based on the market), there was no sensor for the PTU temperature. So no way AWD will disconnect due to PTU temperature. And yes, the owner's manual does state that AWD will turn off due to high tempreture, but I believe it would disconnect due to the coupling itself overheating as the Edge has the AWD coupling as part of the rear differential (RDU) and it is responsible for connecting the rear wheels & managing how much torque is sent to the rear.

    That sounds more plausible.

  11. 90% IR block

    Dub IR Nano Ceramic Tint

    http://www.dubirtint.com

I browsed the web site and couldn't find confirmation that their "tint" was also intended for the front windshield - can you confirm?

It's also not 'clear' how dark the tint needs to be to effectively reduce cabin heat, and if that grade of tint would be legal.

    http://www.christopherteh.com/blog/2013/03/car-cool/

So, here is the bottom line: if you are looking to cool your car cabin, choose a tint with a high heat rejection rate and place a reflective sunshade on the front windshield during parking.

  12. My son just got his new Mustang front windshield done with a clear tint (I never heard of such a thing either)...........

and the selling hype said 100 % UV protection and significant heat reduction !

I'm skeptical, but they assurred him that he would never need a windshield heat shield again

I've heard that the windshields are inherently UV blocking, so I Googled and it seems to confirm that.

    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/culture/commuting/does-my-windshield-protect-me-from-the-sun/article12495123/

"Your windshield is normally quite different from the rest of your glass, in that it's two pieces of glass laminated with a layer of plastic – vinyl – in between," says Vandal. "So that triple-layer system by its nature – because plastics don't like UV – contains UV inhibitors that protect the plastic and as a result also protect any transmission of UV through it. So a windshield, laminated glass, blocks 98 to 99 per cent of all UV – A, B or C."

  13. It's tint for your windshield basically. But a hundred percent legal and clear. You can see the difference between the color of the windshield and the uncovered area they cut out for the registration sticker.

That just doesn't make sense, I've never heard of a "Clear Tint".

  14. I have performed testing on gear lubes at a lab and researched the PTU gear lubes. The results and top gear lubes for the PTU are presented in MACT Ford Edge youtube and the discussions on PTU maintenance, drilling and plug installation for previous generations. Here is one video of many addressing the PTU. I will say the best thing Ford has done is install a drain plug, provided air induction for cooling and added coolant assisted cooling for the PTU with the addition of more gear lube volume.

My 2017 Sport has the drain plug, but not the air induction, nor increased gear lube volume - did the air induction and increased lube come later than 2017?

Not sure what the gear lube volume was on previous versions, but mine is just shy of a quart.

  15. All I can say is I've had it on four vehicles, most recently on my F-150 Platinum for about 4 years and I never had to use a sun shade, and I park uncovered at work. It's nano-ceramic. To each his own. I didn't mean to hijack this thread.

Window tinting will most certainly reduce the cabin temperature, but many, like myself, have the factory privacy tinting and not prepared to apply anything that's darker/illegal , and there's no way a 100% transparent coating on the windshield will reduce the cabin temperature.

I would not consider tinting the front windshield.

Maybe you should give a shade a try, ....... you might be surprised.

  16. I just picked up my Sport, but on all my other vehicles I've added the nano ceramic coating to the windshield. Makes a huge difference I our Hot Texas heat. Sport's getting it done on the 19th. It was only $200 for the front windshield.

Please post a link to that coating.

I can understand how it would help in the rain, but don't understand how it will keep out the Texas sun rays.
