Primetime,

Have you been using the same dealership for all the repair attempts? If so, please tell me that you are at least using a different dealership for attempt 7.

I don't know about him but I am unfortunately stuck with 2 ford dealerships in germany that know little about our american cars. and one of them told me nothing was wrong......and now i am going back for the 5th time in 2 and a half years....

Hey guys,

Unforunately I don't have many options for other dealerships here in MT. The closest large dealership is 90 miles away and owned by the same person as the one in my city. I could go closer if I want to use a very small dealer I could get closer, 45 miles, but I doubt they would be any better due to their much smaller volume of cars - not to mention satisfying me isn't going to be their top priority since I bought the car at a different Ford dealer. I know around here most dealers will give top priority to their own customers before someone else's. That leaves my with driving over 160 miles (one way) for another large dealer to try it out and see if they can do a better job, which I have my doubts on. I'm trying to be patient because as some point I would think the dealer is going to get sick of seeing this car in and get it fixed. Not to mention I really don't want to incur the cost of that trip, time off work, perhaps a motel, meals, etc just to try a dealer that far away. I've been trying to push them for a new PTU and axle in case there is some small defect they can't see when they check it out, but Ford is telling them to keep trying seal kits. I do know they are using the latest one. Supposedly Ford has yet another design they are working on, but it has not been released yet. I do question the abilities of their techs to a point, but on the same hand they said they have fixed many of them with one fix and have never had one in as many times as mine for it. I think this is basically one of those deals where they don't really care how much it comes in as long as they are getting paid - by Ford for now. I can't believe I'm saying this, but my wife and I still really like the car except for this problem. I'm wondering if my only option is going to be to "test drive" another more expensive vehicle while mine is in the shop next time and hold it for ransom until they replace everything in the darn thing!!

Oh yeah and it's leaking again....8th time a charm??? I'll be calling them on Monday to get it in...

I would call the head office and let them hear it. That's crazy, like I said, I had mine done year ago and problem solved.

Thanks for the support. Edge is in and the service advisor and mechanic both agree with me to try replacing both the PTU and axle. They have to get the OK from Ford. According to them, Ford is the only reason they keep trying to do seals. Hopefully whatever the choice it gets fixed permanently this time. They say mine is the only one they have had that has been back more than one time for the same problem although they have seen a lot of them leak. I'll keep you all posted on the progress.

  • 1 month later...

Just dropped mine off this morning at the dealership here in germany after the car filled with smoke...they are bringing a special technician from 4 hours away to look at it...

This is really getting old...leaking worse than ever. Will be going in Monday for 11th repair.

I am definitely late to this party. I don't know about overseas dealers, but the ones in the states should abide by "lemon Laws". If you have the same problem over and over again with Ford supposedly fixing it, then you may have a lemon. Bring this to their attention. I would consider this dance you are having to do inexcusable. [Easy to say this when you don't have those problems you've been experiencing, I admit.] I hope Ford is providing a "loaner" vehicle also.

well they only took two weeks to look at diagnose, call in a special mechanic from 4 hours away(I am in Germany with a US Spec car), and replace a seal. I believe it was the newer seal that you guys have mentioned but am not positive as they have different part numbers on their work orders. Mine shows "10727549" as the seal's part number. as for it taking 2 weeks i must say that i had no appt when it went in but the garage was very accommodating seeing as though the car did fill with smoke that morning due to the leak being that bad. hopefully it will hold till this time next year as I will then be back in the states and have it payed down enough i will be able to trade it in on something more reliable(Maybe another BMW like my new 328i i just got a month ago!!!

I have just under 15 turns on my edge, recently noticed a pungent, burnt rubber smell after I get her warmed up, say 10 minutes on the highway with even a hint of antifreeze or sweetness.

Ā

Wife said she thought it was even smoking last night when she pulled it into the garage, but that could easily be mistaken since it has been fairly cold here. Anyhow got a service appointment, scheduled for drop off tomorrow.

Ā

I checked the oil, no sign of antifreeze there, no obvious leaks or puddles under the truck, not in the garage or on fresh snow. Resevoir is fine as well. I suppose it is possible whatever is leaking is dripping onto the manifold and burning off? Anyhow, anyone experienced something similar? Just wondering what to expect early next week. I will of course keep you all posted.

Ā

No it's isn't red, thank heavens...

Ā

My new 2011 Edge just had to have new seals put on the PTU, Had 1500 miles on it,

Well I simply had enough of them replacing the seals, so I had a nice talk with the dealer and they got the authorization to put in a whole new PTU unit. It was still a warranty item so no cost to me, but the cost to them was roughly $1500 parts + labor.

Ā

I'm hoping that this new unit has been updated since the original one that kept leaking... (crosses fingers)

Going in today for 12th repair...My plan is to not accept the vehicle back unless there is a new PTU in it, but I am not looking forward to the pain it is going to be to get them to do that.

Ā

Good grief man - find a new service tech that knows what they're doing.

They are flying in a specialist from Ford this time...I told them I wasn't accepting another seal kit even though it has already had a new PTU and new axle. I'm going for another new PTU.

New PTU should be installed today. I'm crossing fingers again. 12th time's a charm right?

I cannot believe the '11's are still having this issue ! Why doesn't Ford just ditch the PTU design and use the design of another car manufacturer. This is utterly ridiculous. I am so glad I did not go with the AWD.

2011 don't have this problem? It's miner fix anyway .....
