FORScan, what do I buy to make code changes?

Hi Merritt,

Good news, FORScan is free to use.  You'll download from forscan.org then load it to a PC and register for two months (renewable) of use for free.
To use it you'll need an OBDII code reader.  If you prefer a wired type that plugs into a laptop via USB you'll want something like this: https://amzn.to/39qcLg3
If you like the flexibility of being able to check vehicle data while you're on the road (using an app like Torque Plus) you'll want a bluetooth enabled product like this:  https://amzn.to/2F51BQ0
Or, if you have an iOS phone you'll need a slightly pricier option:  https://amzn.to/2Qw1n9P

Again, the wired code reader will work fine for turning options on/off.  For on the road flexibility, go with one of the wireless options.

Cheers

In addition to the above, I'll add these 2 a bit more expensive options which in my opinion are worth the extra cost:

For a wired adapter, there is now the OBDLink EX which was developed with the ForScan team and is considered one of the best options. It also automatically switches between HS & MS-CAN to read all Ford modules. It can also work for Firmware flashing that might come in future

ForScan builds.

For wireless, the updated OBDLink MX+ has the an additional feature compared to the non + version in that it includes Free unlimited vehicle-specific OEM data upgrades. This allows you to use OBDLink's app to read manufacturer specific codes for many other makes. For Ford vehicles it won't matter because ForScan does a better job anyway, but is a useful tool if you have other makes.

I have the $30 wired USB one, and find the cord just a little short - can't put my laptop on the passenger seat, but it does work and I don't use it much (ford Edge and Mustang).

I know its not truly a bother due to the infrequent use of it, just wanted to share that they do make relatively inexpensive OBD extension cables.

Is separate software required (such as FORScan) or do any come with built in software to allow me change coding?

OBDLink products can make use of their proprietary software (free download) but that only displays vehicle data.  I've found the app "Torque Pro" to be a far better choice if you have an Android phone/tablet.
As already noted, to make changes to the Edge's systems you'll need the (free) FORScan for PCs.

Is there a table that shows the different parameters and their effects?  I found an F-150 table.

The F150 spreadsheet works reliably with the Gen2 Edge.  You just have to avoid trying modifications on equipment you don't have like folding mirrors, certain dashboard displays etc. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uDSQ1Z5a2Wt8-kjrSiVSlDFGFHnfeuhb3RTMVz95730/edit#gid=815852466

Remember the one major rule with FORScan....back up your modules before you make changes.   Yes, you can download your entire AsBuilt file from Ford but it's a lot handier to have an individual module backup done just before you modify something.  If the mod doesn't work it's simple to revert back.

In addition to the F150 spreadsheet mentioned above I also use the Fusion spreadsheet created by DanMc85.

Dan also has a tutorial available here:

Purchased this last week..... tested this past weekend.... good to go!!!  And yes, you need to download and install FORscan. If you are downloading from the FORscan.org site, make sure you disable virus scanning apps, you will get a false positive from their unpacker. The app is free.... the license is free. And with this particular OBD II device you have the ability to use all of the functions as it can communicate via the Mid and High speed CAN buses.
