Rotors Don't Warp from heat or ceramic pads
macbwt replied to dshamer's topic in Brakes, Chassis & Suspension
Well written article. I will however say that antilock brakes and traction control are your worst enemy for your rotors. Get stuck sometime and do not turn it off then hit the gas. You will be buying new brakes and replacing warped rotors (been down that road). Heat causes metal to change even at 300 degrees. If you don't believe it just heat up a piece of metal to 300 degrees then cool it then reheat it then cool it then reheat it.... on and on then you will see a change that is measurable. -
But you will need good brakes!!! As they say objects in mirror are closer than they appear. The end of the line at a drag strip approaches very quickly. Oh hit something else today with the Orange Crush. No damage but that is one less crow in Iowa.

Interesting note: When I first bought the Orange Crush I did a standing start with it and hit 117 before I had to shut down. I also found it interesting that it did not shift into sixth gear until 106 mph. The rated est. speed of the ford edge is 135+ mph not so sure about stability with this body design at that speed. Note for safety don't try this unless you have access to a controlled area (i.e. drag strip)

Gas cap light turned off about a week ago. I did nothing to it. No light means smooth flying. Not a worry in the world. LOL. Who in the world turns left on a busy interstate!!! what an idiot I almost hit!!!! Figures he is from Illinois probably lost.

Ever wonder what happens when a mechanic test drives your car? As most of you know I have a dashcam. This mechanic was oblivious to the dashcam and it of course records audio and video. He had some interesting conversations with himself. I assume some of it directed at my Ford Edge. He must be more accustomed to driving a BMW M5 or something like that as he did not appreciate my rather worn Ford Edge.

I think the after market folks are after the younger ones and those small fast cars. Not seeing too many younger ones going crazy over the Ford Edge. I will stick with OEM. The rack and pinion company I was looking at says they rebuild and sell OEM remanufactured rack and pinions. Not an after market system. Guess the quality of their remans is the question.

A fan (some distance away) would create enough air movement to prevent vapor pooling of gas thus reducing chances of fire. Old EPA attitude the solution to your pollution is dilution. More air less hazard.

My right front strut bearing mount is groaning (no better description) it has about 55k on it now with the left front having 45k. They will need replacement later this summer and I was hoping to just pop a quick strut in, but I guess the video will be of me completely reworking the whole thing. I am seriously considering two new springs as the originals have got to have some fatigue on them by now. Who knows I may end up having to replace the rack and pinion. Which may be the opportunity to do everything at once. Or it could be mechanical suicide. completely ripping apart the entire suspension and steering? What you think one thing at a time or just dive in and pray along the way.

I know. They sell all the parts, but they do not sell them as a quick strut. Makes no sense.
-
Did not think of that warranty thing. They always give me back my old parts. Actually they force me to take them. LOL
-
That is a pricy part over near 400 dollars. Keep the old one and take it to the junk yard for cash the high priced metal inside is worth something.

Can anyone point me to a Monroe Quick Strut for a 2008 Ford Edge. Not having much luck in locating one online. All the sites want to sell me the parts but not a complete unit.

Take it to Bill Colwells in Hudson, Iowa they are working on the same issue on a 2011 Ford Edge and may have found the fix. Something about a battery wiring link.

Orange crush riding good and tracking great. Long needed update. First 200 miles today was great. A more relaxing drive. -
I clean the K&N with the cleaning and oiling kit. Just follow the instructions. I one time when I first used K&N overoiled and it affected the MAF. I learned how to apply the oil and have not had an issue since then. Been using K&N on my Orange Crush since 2010 and never once have i had a problem with the MAF sensor. Just do not over do the oil and wipe it down good before installing to absorb any excess oil after application. Hopefully you understand I am pushing Akirby's activation button!!!

Overall looks very doable as far as replacement. Definitely a job to plan ahead for, but ordering the parts would be far less costly. After looking at the diagram.....I would do it. After all how hard can it be....? Forgive me for laughing at myself. I support you to perform the work yourself you have everything to gain and lots of money to lose. Go for it!!!

simply answered. No it would not. It is a car that is broken they provide me with a rental and I drive away. Wait for it to be repaired then go back and get it. quite frankly they would be doing me a favor if the tank leaked and gave me a rental. A rental would mean saving a lot of money on repairs, oil changes and consumable items like brakes and tires. Then also clocking miles on the vehicle and having it depreciate. Yep run clock out on the rental and save money. Plus installing another used tank most likely would result in Ford possibly not wanting to replace the replacement as it would not be the tank/Truck included in the recall. Just thinking ahead.

Serious reply: Ultimately just get an air filter and change it when it gets dirty. I use K&N just because I want to and feel I save a few bucks by cleaning and reusing it. Not so serious statement: I have heard that Akirby is a strong believer in the K&N and the new dry filters that are reusable he swears by them and believes through science and data that he gets at least 30 hp increase and an extra 3 miles per gallon by using them, but you may wish for him to respond to his topic as I am sure he will. I think he even owns stock in K&N.

The 2011 over all has a far better ride in comparison to my very worn 2008. I really like the ride of the 2011, but the Orange Crush has that old comfortable t-shirt feel to me. Future work is the Left side LCA as the ball joint is worn. Then I am going to put quick struts (third set) on it as I feel the springs need to be changed also. I am most likely going with a monroe quick strut if available. I of course will make video's of this work. As I mentioned before my rack and pinion is starting to leak so that may be a future job. MG likes the comments and it drives her to spend more time with Dad and I like that. Thank you for your support and remember to like us and subscribe so you can be notified when we put up our videos. -
I would say if you have the ambition and willingness to dive in head first you could save a lot of $$$$ by doing this yourself. The parts seem to be about a quarter or less of the total price to repair.

I have the best warranty available for the Orange Crush. It is the MACBWT B2B warranty and it covers everything.
