Check your alternator and voltage regulator just to be on the safe side and make sure it is working.
-
Some say buy the 90 or 100 dollar battery. Well this battery will be #3 for the 2011 so if over the time I have the car I have to buy three batteries? How much would I spend? This is not a common core math problem. LOL

***NEED ADVICE*** - Is 100K Miles too many??
macbwt replied to Matt Nichols's topic in Buying, Leasing & Ordering
So far both of mine are doing very well. Both 2011's I am currently going to be replacing the alternator in Lullubelle since the voltage regulator has failed or failing. So far for me this seems to be the only issue. Recommend changing the power steering fluid, brake fluid and transmission fluid. Shocks and struts may also be needing some replacement soon. Lullubelle and Blueberry have both had new APIM's installed. They are February and January builds and both are FWD limiteds. I am currently driving the wheels off of Lullubelle Price seem reasonable. If you want video's on 2011 maintence go to MACTFORDEDGE on youtube this should provide you with some more information. -
You are just trying to get me into more trouble. But if I did it while she was gone........?????

I talked to the Auto Skills mechanic and he replaced an alternator on a Lincoln MKX and he said he ended up having to remove the drive axle to get the alternator out. This should be an interesting video and I am planning on two days just to have time to do the work and video the removal process and then the installation.

I know I was surprised to find my wifes was perfect and the church van battery was toast but the charging system was good also. I had to be sure the SOLAR BA7 was verified so went to the auto skills to confirm the solar reading and sure enough spot on with the diagnosis. I am going to try it on my golf cart batteries this spring although I am not sure it will work on 6v batteries but may work on the 8volt batteries.

Just a note to thank all those who have tuned into MACTFORDEDGE youtube channel. I have reached and exceeded over 500,000 minutes viewed in just a little over a year. Another video showing how to remove and install a new alternator will be forth coming. Should be on of the biggest projects I have done so far.

I agree the PCM is going to be your biggest cost unless you can opt for a refurbished one or have the one that was in your car repaired. That would be the only option to try to reduce the costs. You might be able to get a used PCM from a recycling yard and have it reprogramed for your Edge. I totally understand your feelings as I have been in the same boat while in the military. Remember if money to repair is an issue you have other assistance through the military support such as Army/Navy/Marie/Air Force relief funds. If you live at or near a base you could always see if the Auto Skills center has mechanics that would be able to repair this and it may be less expensive and puts money back into your MWR on base.

Yeah mine had all that and a filter was supposed to mow on grades etc. Wife came to me one day and said God said she should help me with more work outside mowing the lawn. I am rather picky about who uses my mower etc. I relented and took over an hour to get her on it and how it worked then she let loose on the front yard and in her really wide turn cut a half moon shape out of the neighbors yard. Bear with me it gets better.... Anyway she mowed our yard and the neighbors (not even a thank you from him) LOL I then opened the gate and she started mowing the lawn and I let her go and watched her then went outside and told her to run the other direction because she was mowing and throwing the grass onto the uncut grass and piling it up. She turn it around and was mowing. I went inside to look out the window as she said it made her nervous with me watching. Yep sat down and watched. Then..... BANG......and I looked to see white smoke blowing out of the engine covering.... I just knew the engine blew. I went out and she said does it need gas? I said nope I just filled it remember? OH.. Well it won't start I tried. I went and turned the key and that engine spun like a top with no minutia of compression. I just knew the connecting rod was in multiple pieces inside the oil pan. My neighbor (other side of my house) came out on the deck and said what was that noise? I responded "Just GOD telling my wife to get off my lawn mower" I get a new one this spring (cub cadet or john deere not sure yet) I know this is off topic but just felt like the right time to tell the story.

I have found the Motorcraft new alternator http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1109652&cc=1446671&jsn=509at rock auto. There pricing includes a 75 core charge. MOTORCRAFT GL928 alternator Rockauto seems to have the best price when compared to Amazon and Ebay.

Dorman part? In this case size matters. I watched a youtube where a guy literally glued to dimes together and then glued them to the stop on the brake and it actually worked.
-
Does not mean much. Never had a new part fail?
-
I was thinking about the electrical and alternator and I overlooked a symptom. All my devices I plugged into the 12v power were not charging but remaining at their level but never actually charging and if they did they gained very little charge. Items were cell phone, Ipad, GPS, Dashcams etc. So keep this in mind if you are having charging issues and never seem to charge anything this could mean your alternator is not working.

If possible check the maintenance history from Ford. You may also be able to get some information on the maintenance history by paying for a carfax report on the vehicle. couple of other items would be the throttle body, but not really a symptom you are describing. other item may be unrelated but check the power steering vacuum as it has been known to do weird things with the edge. Note: Upon further reading on what you are saying and knowing Wisconsin. I am almost willing to bet your TSS and OSS sensors are starting to act up and have not been changed out. This symptom will not register any codes until complete failure. I am betting it happens at hills and when driving and does it from infrequently to a progression of more frequently. You should also start feeling more shift bump at stop signs and lights along with lazy shifts. The dealer will not know what is wrong until it or they fail. (TSS OSS) sensors. Rest assured this is not a fatal issue with the transmission but it is a 700 dollar repair. Changing the fluid might help some but will not stop the failures. You should always change the fluid when you buy a used car. Just do not panic if it fails as it will throw a whole bunch of dash lights. If you are in the middle of now where (Wisconsin qualifies) LOL do not stop to check it out. You dash will blank out and show no miles, a wrench sign, low tire pressure and the RPM will go up due to the loss of over drive. Keep driving until you reach a safe place to stop. Driving it will not damage the transmission. Remember once you stop you are pretty much done. The transmission will hardly move the Edge and it will shift into gear with jolt and a bang.

I have looked around and the interstate is equivalent is about 10-15 dollars more than the Odyssey. http://www.interstatebatteries.com/p/automotive-truck/mt7-65-ford-econoline-2014-standard-battery-oem-cca-650-v8-4-6l?dsNav=N~21-2147384906 I will of course have to measure to make sure the Odyssey will fit, but the match specs state it does.

my lawn mower did the same thing for no reason. However not really a comparison.

I have not decided on the brand of AGM I will purchase yet I am seriously considering this one Odyssey 65-PC1750T Automotive and LTV Battery I have decided on the Motorcraft alternator, just want to stay close to OEM on this one. Do not like surprises. This is the video confirmation of the initial SOLAR BA7 tester. Glad I bought it The SOLAR BA7 is a great little device that is sure to be useful in the future.

It is confirmed the voltage regulator has or is failing, but with one strange caveat to the story. The CEL does not show any problems. Nothing is noted and or recorded as a failure in the diagnostics. This leads me to believe I have have found an issue that is not being addressed by Ford or discovered by mechanics and is just being written off as a bad battery or the Ford Edge electronics are causing the drain. So Lullubelle is getting a new alternator and new battery because the failed voltage regulator has caused the battery to fail due to lack of charge and draining increasing causing the battery to sulfate at an accelerated rate which now as of the most recent test with a hot battery is only reading 320 CCA's for the 540 CCA rated 54 series battery. So far this repair conservatively will cost me about 600 dollars maybe more depending on shop time and fees. Parts 200 plus for alternator (Motorcraft) battery AGM 250.00 plus shop time 100 dollars more or less. Not sure what the labor at a shop would be but I bet the price would be more.

Diagnosing a faulty voltage regulator on a 2011 Ford Edge
macbwt replied to macbwt's topic in 2011 Edge & MKX
2011 Ford Edge failing voltage regulator. Upon further review I am charging with no load on the system which means no lights or nothing on. Once I throw on lights, fans, heated seats, defrost etc. the voltage regulator can not charge the battery, but delivers enough to tread water so to speak. This mean the batter essentially is not being charged and barely maintained. The result is the battery discharges through normal use and sitting around results in the battery losing voltage and dying or unable to start the car. The weird thing is it does not throw a CEL. So any shop mechanic would check your battery and say you need and new battery and send you down the road with the problem not being addressed. I am hearing of stories of continued battery replacement and I am sure if a charging system test were to be performed rather than a battery test you would find a lot more voltage regulator failures.- 15 replies

You sure all six cylinders are firing? Transmission fluid has never caused a vibration in any vehicle I have ever worked on. Your vibrations are most likely engine misfired related. or worse case engine failure (which I doubt) 3.5 is a pretty good engine. Misfires are less noticeable at higher RPM than at idle. Misfires will also be even more notable when in drive and brake such as at a stop light or sign. You would be better to have the engine diagnostic performed. The other alternative is the upper right engine mount or the lower left engine mount.

Depending where you live and where the car lived there may be a gas tank recall on both of them. FYI have a recall check performed.
