Zazzy Posted March 26, 2016 Report Share Posted March 26, 2016 (edited) Basic maintenance for the power steering system: drain old fluid, fill new fluid. Did 2 times, getting about 14 oz out each time, with a pump they use for gallon bottles. Drove in between the D&F to help fluid circulate. Castrol Transmax Mercon V, since it's currently on sale at Advance Auto for $4/quart (I think all varieties of Castrol ATF, maybe even the CVT fluid, are on sale there). Old fluid was med to dark brown, both in the glass container I drained into, and in the blot on a paper towel. A check before the second round, the fluid still looked brownish in the container, but pinkish red on the blot. Progress! So left it alone after the second D&F, will check after a few months, I think. Maybe get a BG flush if the fluid becomes brownish again. LOL. I'm flushing the power steering fluid today. The easiest way to flush is to pull off the return line from the reservoir and plug/cap the opening on the reservoir. The return line is the small hose. Make sure there is fluid in the reservoir before proceeding further. Then, use another hose to extend the return line to a container. Then fill the reservoir, start up the engine and move the steering wheel left/right. This will draw in new fluid and the return line will pump the old fluid into the container. It's easier if you do this with a 2nd person who has a clue. All they have to do is keep the tank full. Once the fluid coming out of the return line looks new, turn the wheel enough to draw down the the reservoir level to somewhere below max. Then, hook up the return line to the reservoir and make sure the level is above the minimum. If you don't have a helper that is helpful, turn the wheel left/right and shut off the engine. Add fluid to the reservoir, start it up and repeat. Do this until the fluid coming out is clean. BTW, the Mercon V at Walmart is less expensive (about $1 to $2 per quart). I should have said "about $1 to $2 per quart less expensive than the typical Mercon V fluids." The stuff I bought is the Super Tech. Also swapped out a good amount of power steering fluid. Maybe not as much as mac does, but it's a start. Next up is an oil change and hopefully I'll do that myself. The Ford Edge doesn't use such a device AFAIK. The other is using resistors to fool the computer into thinking that the bulb is taking the correct amount of juice. I exposed the wires and wrapped the resistor wire around the correct ones to add resistance. Since I'm not good at soldering, I had a professional do it. They also covered the connections with latex and mounted the resistors to the body with screws. The only issue I might have is if one of the LED bulbs burns out/malfunctions at which point I'm pretty sure I won't be able to replace it with an incandescent bulb. Did change the oil the other day. Buggered up the 15mm bolt head, so I had to run to AutoZone to get a 13mm version with magnetic tip! Used Mobile 1 (WallyWorld Big Jug) and some sort of Fram filter.....it was silverish with a black tip.... Unfortunately noticed that I had one broken stud on both front wheels so now I need new hub bearings....At least I can now have tie rods replaced while they're at it! Not exactly sure...seems to be a mixture of rust and salt from winter and also a possible over-torque from a shop when rotating wheels. It's all good now. Local mechanic saved me a few hundred bucks off of NTB quote and I was able to get outer tie rods done at the same time. Everything is running smooth now. Except, now the TPMS light is on...no code is thrown so that threw me off...and I've tried the brake pedal and hazard light method to try to initiate reset method. Anyone rest TPMS sensors on an 08? I'm not getting a low pressure warning but instead a " Tire Pressure Monitor Fault" but when I read the codes, none showed up.
