  1. First Impressions of 2010 vs 2008. 1) mileage even in as new condition as indicated by the COMPUTER is better now than the 2008 Edge was with 42,000 km on it. 1st number suggest in mixed driving i am now getting about 10.5L per 100 km. When i first had the 2008 I was getting more like 11.5. Still not good but will see how it changes with time and it is an improvement. 2) sound system is definitely better with more definition and base. 3) Sync now works with my i-pod as it should. specifically I do not have to re-sync the USB interface for the i-pod every time I switch off the ignition 4) the wind noise from the front of the drivers door is higher than it was on the 2008. It is not obnoxious but definitely higher. Will discuss with ford but I suspect I will be told it is within spec.
  2. Gets better or worse (depending on one's perspective) if you are over 60
  3. Whilst I would have liked to wait for the new 2011's the deals on the 2010's were just too good. Money in the bank is earning diddly squat, new car prices have to go up and I suspect Ford will put them up on the 2011 and the deals effectivly lower the resale of my 2008 Edge at a later date. So the 2008 with 42000 km on it is gone as of Monday next week replaced by a 2010 AWD Ltd. Have had some issues with the 2008, but was well looked after by dealer and basically was very happy with the Edge. Hence a new Edge.
  4. Didn't realise it was changed for 2011. Will check it out. May be a reason to delay purchase of a new vehicle until next year. Thanks
  5. Just looked at the Explorer. IMHO not even in the same class. V6 is very basic until the Eddie Bauer which is an arm and a leg. Almost have to get the V8. Mileage on both is poor. I suggest that the Flex and MKT are the real challengers but both weigh quite a bit more than the highlander or Pilot and to get reasonable power to compensate for the increased weight (ecoboost) requires the use of premium gas. After analysing my options I think I will stay with the Edge since I really like it and buy a lightweight travel trailer. Will revisit the situation next year when the 2011 Edge and MKX and I find out how much I miss not having the Harley to ride. At that point I may buy a truck and a toy hauler.
  6. Answer my own question. According to the Ford web page the 2011 Edge still has only 3500lbs towing capacity. Shame!
  7. Some info here www.leftlanenews.com/ford-edge.html
  8. Very happy despite PTU and heating issues (all resolved by dealer under warranty). Would like better mileage though
  9. Does anyone have any info on the towing capacity of the 2011 Edge with the bigger engines? Bearing in mind that both the Highlander and Pilot can both tow 4500/5000 lbs and use a Class III hitch, there was some speculation that ford may increase the Edge's rating, especially since the MKT and flex can both tow 5000 lbs (4500lbs -cannot remember).
  10. Ditto on the HVAC fan motor. Whine, which is only bad 1st thing after a cold startup and goes away when heater switched off. Trying to tell where the whine comes from by sound alone is impossible as it reverberates all over the cabin
  11. I just pulled my invoice for the 24,000 km service. No charge oil and filter change - part of the sale contract. Can$158.40 labour for the scheduled maintenance, Can$32.64 for the cabin pollen filter and Can $100.80 (labour) for the "park brake service". For the park brake service it was explained that they had to do some disassembly (and re-assembly) in order to do the service - no problems found. Total is Can$291.84. I thought it a bit expensive but did not question the numbers because to date I feel like my local dealer's service department has been OK to good and with Ontario's Nanny State rules/regulations/etc. I know the shop rate is up there. Would be interested to hear other comments though.
  12. Quote - Exactly. Not "ALL" it is "Some". Normally i dont bother to reply to this sort of thing but I will make an exception in this case. I fully agree the wording is some. However, the word "some" and the cause of the " some" does not appear to batch identifiable or quantifiable. Further, since it is my understanding that the problem appears to be intermittently ongoing does mean that all have to be CONSIDERED suspect. That does not mean they are. Until Ford can identify by VIN number each vehicle that has or may have a problem, I repeat, all vehicles must be considered suspect.
  13. Quote "The issue is with the heater cores themselves being contaminated during their manufacturing process. Some heater cores had an excess amount of flux residue that can lead to clogging of the heater core. This is what is causing the "loss of heat" Interesting in that it suggests that all heater cores right up to 2010 and possibly later have to be considered suspect. Thats a lot of vehicles. Strange that Ford (and Lincoln) has waited so long to do anything serious about it. If the story is true it does not say a lot about the quest for continuous improvement. and customer satisfaction. Overall my Edge has been in the shop at least 6 times for the heater problem and whilst I have been well treated by the dealer it has used a lot of my time. Fortunately I am retired.
  14. 2008 AWD Ltd with towing package - New. Replaced heater core very early after delivery. Year later limited heat, heating system flushed and new bits put in, works now as it should. PTU replaced a month ago, so far so good. Have a periodic high pitched whine that I am certain is the heater motor - still to be dealt with because by the time i get to the dealers it has warmed up and gone away. Service at the local Ford dealer has been good to excellent. Love the vehicle. Will definitely look at a 2010 or if there are no discounts for a 2011.
  15. Found the source of my high pitched whine/sound. IT IS THE HEATER MOTOR. I had developed some suspicions based on when and how it occured. This morning there it was loud and obnoxious. Switched off the heating and away it went together with a wining down sound. Switched on the heating, there it was. Repeated it four times. Same thing every time. Now i just have to get it to do it when I am at the dealers.
  16. I dont have parts numbers since the warranty just quoted seal replacement, but see my recent post on the thread previously mentioned.
  17. More info that might add to the picture, especially when added to everyone else's data. When I got my Edge back from having the PTO seals replaced the heating system was off. I did not notice it straight away but after a few km the side window started to frost up and it was getting cold since the outside temp was about -15C. When I switched on the heating there was my "high" pitched wine. It did not last long but it was there. This supports a previous post where one morning when the whine was really bad and did not go away I heard it "winding down" when I switched the engine off. Whilst it does sound like a fuel pump I did also mention in one post that it also sounded like a heater fan but I didn't think it could be in a "new" vehicle. Bearing in mind all my other heater problems I am starting to wonder if this might just be one more and that the whine is actually the heater fan bearing. Anyone know how difficult it is to replace the fan?
  18. Got the seal(s) replaced last Friday. No details on warranty document. Supposedly the latest version which was why I had to wait. Could smell burning oil after the 35km drive home at -15C. This time it smelt more like engine oil than the fairly distinct smell I had before. Went for a drive Saturday am at -22C, when stopped could smell burning oil and back at house could see smoke when I looked underneath. Could see oil on a big black rubber gasket/spacer. Sunday am at -15 burning smell almost gone. Monday -18 back 35 km to dealer. Almost no smell when stopped. Dealer was very good, had vehicle up on hoist within 10 minutes and let me show tech where I saw the oil coming from. Tech advised that when he removed the old seal, oil went everywhere and the residue that he could not clean-up was what I was seeing and smelling. Seal did look clean, but vechicle had been on the hoist before I was called out to the shop. Trend of decreasing smell would agree with explanation. So we will see what happens over the next while and keep everyone posted. Dealer was good providing a loner.
  19. Mine did same. Wanted it replaced. Dealer cleaned it up with something. Looks like new. This was a year ago.
  20. Update 2010 Jan 31. The magical flush has been completed and various new bits installed (VC11 antifreeze, 7T4Z 8A505 DA Hose, CVC 10A antifreeze, 8T4Z 7275 CC Kit Seal, and replaced water pump inlet tube). I can report that it appear to be successful. I have good heat (as it used to be) even at -20C yesterday morning. My personal suspicion that it was an actuator were wrong. I will not pass comment on the PTO take off seal replacement until i have talked to the dealer tomorrow!
  21. I am perhaps missing something, but it sounds like there are two distinct problems. One is the "low" hum only heard at some degree of speed and seems to be resolved by changing bearings. Two a "high" pitched noise that can be heard at idle and at speed and may or may not be intermittent. Most people, myself included since I do have the high pitched noise, suspect that this is a fuel pump problem although information from this forum suggests that replacing the fuel pump does not solve the problem. Note in my case for the most part the noise goes away when the vehicle gets warmed up so by the time i get to the dealers it is gone.
  22. I find the last two replies most interesting and informative. I went with the Ford remote start, which was at additional cost, because in my innocence I thought it would be the most compatible and functional. It seems I was wrong on both accounts, there were numerous problems during the installation and after some warranty work they had one heck of a time to get it working again. Thanks
  23. I was told my the Ford dealer that using the remote to turn on the heated seats is a product liability issue (I'm not even sure if they work unless someone is sitting on them, i.e. there is a pressure switch in the seat) and turning on the rear window defrost is a programming problem, i.e. the software system in the Edge will not allow it.
  24. Thanks for video link. Much appreciated
